A-rig swivels...Why not Split Rings instead?

Every A-rig I have seen uses swivels to attach the jigheads. Why not just put a split ring on the end of the wires and use that to attach the jigheads. I know that it would take longer to change baits when on the water. But, if the wires are aligned correctly, wouldn't split rings work just as well?

    Jeff, good question.

I found that if you get hung up and break or bend a hook that a split ring would make changing the head out a pain in the Azz. I poured a whole lot of heads this winter and ready to go for the spring, one thing I did was poured some aluminite heads in my standard grub head mold and used microbubbles in the mix. this makes the jig head float and I use them with dummy baits after cutting off the hook so the hooks are at the bottom...

The swivels are needed to let the baits right themselves... Otherwise the baits will be upside down 1/2 the time.

What do you need Jigheads for? Why can't you just put a hook on the swivel with what ever plastic you are using and go with that. The main tying point weighs about 1/2 oz any way. This rig already weighs 1/2 oz to 1 oz with head and wires. Add various size jigheads and you are up to almost 3 oz. How about two jigheads on the bottom arms and three hooks with plastic on the upper three?

Many ways to do this, But I prefer the weightless type and 1/8 oz heads. These type swim baits wont run weightless.

I rigged up one of these last night and it seems as though no one has wrote the book on usage. Some say heavy arsenal, this size jighead and what ever soft plastic you want. Since the main tying point on these rigs has weight to it, I don't see why you have to have all arms with weighted soft plastic. It seems to me if you have, let's say five arms, then why not weigh the bottom two and just use a hook on the other three with whatever soft plastic you want. This is a rig that you are casting and reeling, not giving it any extra movement. All more weight would mean is sinking faster. The grubs, swim baits or what ever are going to swim when you reel anyway. less weight to me means less problems.......... Just brain storming.

im throwing the trendsetter weightless rigs with 1/8-oz jigheads. when you throw the weighted rigs the head will get snagged in the rocks and you lose some of them also they pull the baits down and swim baits really need a weighted head to get action,on the weightless rigs the jigs will get hung and with braid you can break the 40lb swivel and get the rig back on the weightless rigs the baits pull the harness down and back a bit kind of like the old flying lures they will back up under a dock or timber

if you put weightless baits on it its just going to spin in the water like a spinnerblade I have used 2 jigheads on the bottom with weightless hooks on the top and center wires the rig wont spin then but the weightless baits will you either need weighted hooks or jigheads plain and simple
too small of weighted hooks will also cause the baits to spin
I use 65 and 80lb braid on my rigs and 50lb power snaps on 70lb swivels to hold my baits on just for the simple reason if the baits hang bad enough and you cant straighten the hooks the snaps will break instead of loosing all of my rigs
anyone who has questions on the A-rig can contact me. I have fished the A-rig exclusively since september 3-4 days a week just to better learn the many different ways of using it

    Re: (crankmaster)

I make weightless A-rigs and put no weight on the baits and it runs fine for me.
