    Speedometer hole plugged

Sorry I don't know the correct term for the speedometer hole but I"m sure you know what I'm talking about. I understand it pretty much stays clogged. However I'm always able to clean it out with a drill bit and all is well until the next trip. This time it won't come unclogged. The hole seems clear of debris. I can get the bit all the way in and it comes out clean. The speedometer moves a little registering about 10-15 mph at WOT but that's it.

    1) Is there a more involved surgery I need to do to clean it out?
    2) Have I damaged something ramming a drill bit in and out of the hole?
    3) Should I just give up on ever having this thing working again?

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Re: Speedometer hole plugged (hard2gard)

These things have plugged from the first day they were invented. If you want to have less stress in your life forget about it and just use your GPS. Much more accurate and you'll never have to clean anything out. I was so anal in my early years that I constantly cleaned mine because it bugged me so bad. That is time I'll never get back in life. If I ever order a new boat I won't even consider having a speedo installed to take up valuable space in my dash.

The "pitot pickup" feeds pressure into a small black tube, which runs up into the cowling (at the front right side.... comes into the cowling right behind the oil pump).

You can locate a "disconnect" point on this tube- and blow "backwards" through it with compressed air.

These pickups WILL plug any time you run in "debris laden water".

I find if you soak and let sit , repeat 10 times, the debris can rot out and clean the hole itself. Just don't worry about it and it will start working again...eventually.

    Re: Speedometer hole plugged (bab33face)

by the way its called the "pitot pickup" not speedometer hole

thanks for all the advice guys. i guess I should be happy that's the only problem i have with my merc...

perhaps I will attempt to invent a better "pitot pickup poker"?

They have cloggged on every Merc I have owned. I am smart enough now to leave it clogged and not worry about it. The speedometer is the most inaccurate guage on a boat.

Well- close! Second only to the "analog tachometer".

I'm putting a regular float type sending unit fuel gage up there too......runnin a close second if not 1st........

At least with the speedo, I know I am going slower when it is working.....with a float type sending unit fuel gage, you don't know whether it is reading high or low

    Re: Speedometer hole plugged (TRCM)

You are right, I forgot about the fuel sending unit. They probably are worse than the speedometer. Thank God for the smartcraft guage. My fuel gauge in the dash of my Z21 shows almost empty after 8 gallons used.
