Micro Guides what do you think

I would think that micro guides are not necessarily better. Smaller diameter guides may equal more line-to-guide contact (friction), thus reducing casting distance. What do you think?

Smaller diameter guides means less line slap and less of a chance for the line to contact the the blank, thus increasing casting distance. You loose more casting distance because of the slap than you do to any friction in the guides.

The above statements are true, but the downsides are:
    1) Ice clogs the eyes much easier for those of us who fish cold water
    2) Likewise, grass, pollen, and other stuff that floats on the water will plug quickly as well.

They are not for everyone, that's for sure!

Check this out - this was written with 3+ years of micro guide experience and several hundred micro guided rods on the water in constant use.

Micro guides do not impede the flow of line, but rather control it allowing it to run out better.

Think about this - the first guide on every one of your rigs is not on the rod, it's on the reel. Most reels have a guide ring equal to that of a micro guide.

the only downside to micros is if you need to pass a knot (braid to floro leader for instance). even then, you can use a size 4 and be perfectly happy.
i likely won't build another rod for myself that doesn't use them. the lower cost and weight savings are more than enough to justify them. I use them on spinning rods and feel i get better casting distance with light baits.

put a little braid-aid on them and they won't ever freeze.

Re: Micro Guides what do you think (thedude)

I have four identical rods, one with standard concept system, micro guide with proper guide placement, bumper spiral with standard sf fly guides, and bumper spiral with micro. These are all on St Croix SCV70MHF.

To me they are all the same, they all have Daiwa Steez casting reels. I don't notice a reduction in tip weight, faster action, longer casts, accuracy or more sensitivity. If there is a quantifiable difference that is great, but in my hands they feel the same. I prefer the spiral micro or spiral, just because they look cool to me and start a conversation.

They all also have identical grip lengths and identical split grips with ECS seats.
