    Raising 225 Merc

    2001 ProCraft 215 Combo 225 Merc
I have two more possitions I can go up with my 225 Merc how difficult is this project? Future plans are to install a 6" jackplate but until then thought this would help performance. If anyone has some pictures of this process that they could post that would be great. Thanks

Essentially, you need a lifting eye that screws into the top of the flywheel, and an engine hoist.

Install lifting ring, connect hoist, lift engine "slightly", and remove engine attaching hardware.

Reinstall engine and hardware in new position, ensuring that you reseal the bolts/engine mounting surface with 3M 5200 Sealant (or equivalent).

NOTE: BEFORE BEGINNING, YOU NEED TO KNOW YOUR WATER PRESSURE AT WOT. DO NOT FALL BELOW 18 PSI AT WOT (PREFER 20 PSI FOR SAFE MEASURE).

If you're already below 20 psi.... DO NOT RAISE THE ENGINE.

For the purposes of determining "optimum running height".... a temperature gauge is essentially "useless". It's not going to let you know you've gone too high, until you've already got "BIG PROBLEMS".

My recommendation- GET a water pressure gauge, and install it, BEFORE attempting to alter mounting or running height. This is the ONLY "accurate field measure" you have available.

I think that's a good idea. How difficult is it to install one and which one should I get?

Installation is not difficult. As far as which one to use.... would be helpful to know "which" 225 Merc you have (year, carb-efi-optimax, and preferably serial number).

is 18-20 psi correct. my merc manual says for a 95 225 efi 3 liter that the min psi at 5000 rpm is 8-10 psi.i usally run with between 12-15 psi at 5000 rpm.iv never seen anything over 20 psi unless i have the pee hole clogged with trash.

    Re: Raising 225 Merc (jrstorm)

Look at your gearcase. If you have the low water pickups in the front of the gearcase, 15 PSI MINIMUM is your spec.

Without the low water pickups, 8-12 PSI is more realistic.

Most 2001 models DID have the low water pickups.
