    How to shorten rod?

I have a new 7-6 Diawa Zillion rod. It has a split grip. I would like to shorten about roughly 3" off the butt end of the rod. How can I go about doing this?

I am told that I may be able to pull the butt grip off, cut with hack saw and epoxy back on??

    Any advice please.

not likely you'll get rear grip off in one piece. best bet is to pull it off with a razor and some pliers and then buy a new piece of grip with an end cap to glue back in its place.

to cut the blank, use a dremel with a carbon cutting wheel or something similar. High-speed makes a better cut, hacksaw will do the job, but can sliver the fibers.

good idea about cutting with dremel.

Man I wish I was able to slid that lower butt off. Its so nice looking

I would hate to stick a generic butt back on it. Heck I don't even know where to get one.

Maybe someone on this site would be willing to make one for me to glue on?

Any one out there who can make me a custom butt out of the black foam daiwa uses?

Sorry guys I had my blinders on and didn't see the other post about shortening the St. Croix.

you might want to wrap the cutting line with masking tape then cut with the dremel
but ends can be bought at either:

    or at

if you have a lathe with a chuck (for drilling) or even a drill press - you might be able to cut the blank right at the front of the rear grip. measure the blank diameter at the cut, and use your lathe or drill press with the right sized drill bit to bore out the old section of blank that the grip is glued to. Then you can slide the old grip over existing blank. You can buy a metal or rubber winding check that will hide where two meet up.

couple big "ifs" in there, but about the only you'll salvage that rear section.

if the blank is less than 16mm OD you could also use some of the components for the mudhole CRB kit. They all mount to a 16mm tube and are pretty similar to the zillion grips.

    grip kits:

    individual parts:

you would probably need the graphite tubing, Trim Ring for 16mm Carbon Handle Tube, 3 3/8" Rear Grip for Split-Grip Handle (EVA), Rubber Butt Cap Insert for CRB Handle System, Trim Ring for CRB Handle Butt Cap

if your blank is 16mm (or really close) than you wouldn't necessarily need the tube.

That's what I do when shortening handles. Drill the old blank inside the "cut-off" piece to fit over the blank. A trim piece will cover over the joint. Works well, looks good.
