My 225 Pro XS just devloped a loud rattling noise at low rpms 800 to 1200 rpms, it is loud. Sounds like a V8 with no oil in it. What could it be?
Thanks
David

Start with an inspection of the belt, tensioner, compressor pulley, etc. Look for damage on the belt (ANY ABNORMALITY WHATSOEVER). I've had several customers who thought their Opti was "coming apart"... only to find that their belt had a couple strands loose on the backside of the belt, causing a TERRIBLE knocking sound. Often occurs after removal of the belt... if the belt is installed "upside down" (such as when someone has been replacing the flywheel for some reason).![]()
Also, check the belt tensioner. You should not be able to easily deflect it with one or two fingers... it should require reasonable effort with a 3/8" ratchet. It is possible to install the tensioner with the spring in the "wrong position"... leaving the belt "loose".![]()
And of course... flywheel could be loose, gearcase issues, or even a powerhead issue. Start with the obvious....![]()

(such as when someone has been replacing the flywheel for some reason). Now who would of done something like that..
Must of been a senior moment for someone!!!!!!!!!![]()
same problem on mine but mine 250 pro xs it came loose and tore belt![]()
Checked the belt, flywheel or compessor pully does not seem to be lose. The idler pully seems to be good no noise or rough spots when turned by hand. The noise is even at idle. I have not got any horns and everything on smart gauge is the same as before. The lower unit is brand new about 15 hrs. on it. I pulled the cowling yesterday the noise seems to be comming from the top end somewhere.

After our phone conversation, I think we've determined that you have:
1. A bad crankpin bearing in the compressor
2. A damaged belt.
As suggested, I'd recommend having both addressed (new belt, new compressor, and replacement inline oil filters for the compressor) before running again.
