250 Pro Xs - ran perfect idled down off plane - no restart

    2007 Mercury 250 XS Pro SN#1B480385 397 hours

I was doing some prop testing today. Out the gate, zero issues. 2 runs testing the Fury 27 in cooler temps. Changing prop to pad via the hydro jack plate.

I came off plane plane gradually, let it sit down to idle slow enough for no wash over the splash well to make an easy turn, It cut off and would never restart. Loaded it on the trailer with the trolling motor.

Battery x2 group 31, new, 3 weeks old, terminals are secure
Belt is in tack, its new, same as the plugs and filter
Fuel pump runs when I turn the key
    I get the single beep
    Cranks/ starter spins
No faults in the Vessel View Mobile
Seems to fire, spits and sputters, but wont come to life, makes some smoke
Fuses on the ECM do not appear to be blown
    Swapped the relays, same result
    No water in the fuel
Filter and plugs are fresh, less than 2 hours of use

I feel like I'm in here all the time

    kill switch?
Best thing about fishing - spending the day on water with my son! He's the BEST fishing partner ever (even when he outfishes me)!

I don't have the gauges. But from reading, it doesn't have the psi it should on either side. 90ish psi would be more than a "PSST"

I checked the fuel side, it has fuel after a short choppy idle today.
I checked the air side after a short choppy idle, it let out a "PSST", It also has fuel on the air side. That at least points a little bit towards the tracker valve.

I'm certain it's going to the shop on this deal. I gotta recognize I don't have the gauges to properly diagnosis it. If the air compressor is gone, the fuel and air rails will need serviced from my reading and research.

EDIT: Filters for the oil lines to the compressor are clean, no debris in there. Fuel on the air side is pretty significant when I release the pressure. The fuel/ air rails/ injectors are unknown..they will be heading to Don this week.

Without the belt I can turn the blue pulley by hand, easy about 2/3s the way around, then harder for a 1/3..repeats with each revolution.

Please be sure to check the air compressor for problems and make sure the belt/tensioner are intact and good.

I just wanted to follow up to close this one out for anyone who comes across this in a search.

I shipped out my fuel rails, injectors and air injectors to Don. I received back a replacement set plus 5 of 6 new air injectors. Everything of mine was trashed except 1 air injector from a previous compressor failure. I bought the boat/ motor used and did the best pre purchase inspection I could to include a test ride and drive. It ran what I thought was great for what I would call 3 seasons/ summers. It pushed my Triton 21 X HP 79 mph on the GPS. Don provided me the condition of my fuel components, and options/ solutions and here I am..with nearly new everything or newly rebuilt.

I pulled the inline filters after his findings. They were full of metal, however I had previously opened up the compressor to investigate. It looked ..good. It definitely didn't look like it had failed. The filters would of indicated a catastrophic compressor failure of some sort. I had Don proceed as if there was a compressor failure after he and I discussed it via email. I came to the conclusion the compressor failed in a catastrophic manner prior to my ownership and only the compressor was replaced with no attention given to the fuel rails, air injector and ect.

New to me fuel rails, injectors, a rebuild of some components, 5 of 6 new air injectors and a new compressor and I am back up and running.

I'm very detailed orientated, can be OCD and very particular. Don's attention was nothing short of what it would take to satisfy those characteristics of mine. The returned package of parts included everything down to the specific Mercury zip ties and oetiker clamps. I had already bought a very large oetiker clamp kit plus two sets of the special purpose pliers in anticipation of the repair. Those things are my new favorite replacement for the old screw style hose clamps.

Since the oil prime had to be completed, the 3 inline oil filters ( the 2 compressor ones I cut open to find the metal) were replaced. I completely removed the oil tank from the boat and cleaned it completely as well as the oil pickup screen. I was amazed at the "sludge" that was in the bottom. Oil prime complete.

Ran it today on the hose at the house, I'm all smiles and ready to go test on the water. I have no standard to compare it to..but it idles much more peacefully/ crisp.

    Don/ European Marine/ Integrity Injection - A+

Its my opinion that it is not likely that your motor ran for "what I thought was great for what I would call 3 seasons/ summers. It pushed my Triton 21 X HP 79 mph on the GPS" with direct injectors trashed from a previous "catastrophic" compressor failure. I would be highly concerned that there is a possibility of current compressor issues, along with previous issues, and the cumulative accumulation lead to the "trashed" direct injectors. The performance of the boat and motor for three years shows no power loss. I'm sure Don will chime in with his finding and his opinion on how the motor could have performed at that level.

No current compressor issues..its been replaced with a new unit from Don with the fuel system repairs.

I didn't find any damage or wear that matched the debris in the filters when I disassembled the compressor. I'll never know for certain I suppose..

Tested on the lake yesterday, after some easy riding/ driving and little bit of fishing ....hole shot is significantly better, its amazing actually. It picked up .6 on the top end with the Fury 27. Need to go back to the 26, its a little short on the rpm with the 27. If it picks up the same .6 with the 26 it will crack 80.

Thanks Don for all you help.
