    '09 250 Pro XS problem

Okay, so the last time I had the boat out I ran out of gas. (I posted about my gauges being way off on fuel flow info last week). So i dropped her in yesterday and went to start the motor and all i got was a few sputters. so i remembered i had ran it out of gas so i went back and pumped the primer. tried again and same thing. went to prime again and the bulb was hard. tried to start it a few more times and got a few stutters. then i wasnt even getting a stutter. i took of the cowl and emptied the water/fuel seperator (removed the hose off the fitting toward the back of the boat and backed off allen screw toward front) a little gas came out and i saw a little water in it. not much came out, so i pumped the bulb a few times and got clean gas. i then attempted to loosen the fuel filter with a screwdriver and tore it up. i ended up bringing it in to a marina and a mechanic took a look at it. he replaced the filter, and purged the system of air and tried over and over to prime and start the engine to no avail. not even a sputter. he hooked up the computer and it showed no faults. they were very busy, it being memorial day weekend so i ended up leaving and fishing with the trolling motor. Does anyone have any ideas as to what this is? when i turn the key i hear the fuel pump come on so i know its not that. any help would be great. thanks alot

Need a super hot battery for the Optis ECU to get going. Also, I guess you checked the Kill Switch? The motor will crank, but no spark if Kill Switch tripped.

Another possibility is that the fuel rails are FULL of water. With a fuel pressure gauge attached to the starboard side rail, use the "purge" valve on the gauge to "purge" the contents of the rail into a glass jar (with the key on).

I'm going to guess you'll see a lot of water (and the engine won't hit a lick on that).

Once purged to "straight fuel"... try it again. You might have to remove the plugs and clean them to get it running.

thanks guys, i'll check out the starboard side fuel rail. It definetly isn't the kill switch. at first i thought it could be a faulty switch, but i can hear the difference in sound when i try to start it with the switch in the off position vs in the on position. it has a deeper fuller sound when it tries to start with the kill switch on "on". Also, i have two starting batteries in parrallel to run my electronics and start my engine without worries so i dont think its a battery problem.

I watched the mechanic several times purge the air rail, then the fuel rail on the port side, then on the starboard side, then try to start the engine. he did this sequence about 20 times. He did hook up gauges and said i had 60psi of pressure and he thought that was enough. he did mention something about not having constant fuel flow on the starboard side rail.

also, in the owners manual in the instructions for draining the fuel/water seperator, it says something like "if little or nothing comes out, then loosen the fuel filter to vent the chamber." is this chamber suposed to be full of fuel, or just fuel contaminated with water? because only a squirt would come out unless the bulb was primed.

The above excerpt is the key to your problem. When cranking the engine (it may require 3-4 revolutions), the AIR PRESSURE (port rail) should be 94, the Fuel Pressure (starboard rail) should be 108.

You must keep in mind that as the direct injectors (and fuel injectors) open, it is quite possible to transfer "approximately 60 psi of pressure into the fuel rail" that is actually "air pressure" (and not FUEL PRESSURE).

The issue is more than likely one of the following:

    1. Inadequate fuel supply in the IVST (float, needle/seat, etc).
    2. Faulty low pressure, OR high pressure fuel pump.
    3. Lack of voltage supply TO the fuel pumps (blown fuse)
    4. Malfunction or leak in the Air Pressure Regulator, Fuel pressure regulator, or tracker valve.

There are specific diagnostic proceedures for all of the above outlined in the service manual. They will need to be gone through "methodically"... beginning with "supply of fuel TO, and IN the IVST".

Don, thanks so much for all your input on this board. It is amazing how devoted you are to helping everyone out with there questions.

Once i read your last post, i decided to leave this one up to the professionals. It turned out to be a bad high speed fuel pump. my dealer changed it out and i'm ready to go! Thanks
