    Repowering a 2000 190SX

I am contemplating having my 190SX repowered.

Was running up the Mississippi and my 2000 year Mercury 200HP EFI broke down. It left two holes in each side of the top of the power-head.
I had the boat for about 13 years. Engine always ran great. Had it out on Lake Michigan two times before that.

A 200HP Mercury 4 stoke seems to be about about 100 lbs heavier than the 2?

Will the 190SX take the extra weight back there?

I also notice Mercury doesn't list mechanical cable steering on their motors over 150hp. I would have to upgrade my steering also.

I really don't think it is worth rebuilding a 23 year old motor. I'd *guess* that would run me 8k, and then I'd still have an old lower unit and etc..

At the same time the boat is 23 years old so it's hard to justify dropping ~20k on a new motor.

I brought it by a Marina on the way home.. The mechanic said even if I don't get the work done there, he would personally have it repowered, since the boat is so clean for it's age.

    Thanks

Well, it looks like the Optimax weights more than the EFI. Comparable to the Mercury 4 strokes, or even more.

So I think weight should not be a problem.

    I'm still all ears.

I wouldn’t rebuild- because finding a mechanic to work on it, is getting hard to find.
    At least in my area.
Also, where can can you buy a good boat with a brand new out board for 20k?

Are you planning to keep it for another 11 years? If so, upgrade to hydraulic steering and drop a new 200 on it.

    Easy for me to say!

The price seems to climb. I was quoted around 22,500 for a new motor. 2,000 for hydraulic steering.
Then also need to upgrade some of the gauges like tilt.
    And then labor.

I'm looking at close to $26,000.

I'm taking my time, like I always do. I'll Shop around, and keep my eyes peeled for a decent used engine also.

I actually saw that.. Seemed like the seller fell off the face of the earth as soon as people started asking questions. Probably busy.

    Thank you for reminding me..

I think I will text the guy.

    Update:
It must have been sold. or something. The link is now dead.

How do you think this boat would perform with a 150hp Pro XS?

I normally would not want to step down that much, but figured I would ask.

I don't think you'd be happy ... you know Pat says to always go with the max allowed HP.

Yeah.. I kind of figure so.. Tossing Ideas around because to re-power with a brand new 200HP, I'm looking at paying twice as much as what I paid for the whole boat.
Granted that was back in 2010. Wow time flies. I've had the boat for 13 years. Seem like just yesterday when I was pestering Lea, and you all, when I first bought it.

Speaking of prices. Used outboards seem to be like gold, in Wisconsin. For example, I'm seeing 1992 200HP XRi's listed for $4-5k.
Then I see where people asked about XRi's back in 2010 on BBCboards for around the same price, and the leading opinion back then was that is asking too much for a 20 year old motor.

Well I guess I have the Fall & Winter to still figure out what I want to do. Yeah, I'm doing a lot of tire kicking.

Well with Mercury advertising higher HPs now available, maybe that'll help the used market

Go with a 200hp Yamaha SHO, more reliable than a Mercury and you can get 100 more hp out of it with just a tune if you want better performance.

My '98 202 has a rating of all V6's. The new 200 four strokes are V8's I believe. Would that legally put you overpowering the rating?

SHO is a V6. However there is no legal rating on a boat 20' or longer.

Should have prefaced my post as referring to Mercury's. I've heard that too that boats over 20' are unlimited but every 20' boat I've owned has a max size or hp rating on the tag with the boat. Just a question.

The manufacturer can rate it for anything they want but that doesn't mean it's a legal rating.

So I found a local place selling 200hp Mercury outboards. 2021 models brand new.
They say that a mercury dealer has to install it to activate the warranty. That's fine.

I called the shop that has worked on my boat, and he happens to be a dealer. He said they would install it no problem but would like to call Mercury to run the serial numbers and make sure will for sure have an active warranty. Seems like solid advice
I called mercury to see what they think. They agreed, and said get the numbers. And if it checks out when I purchase and bring to a dealer, they can do the delivery inspection and activate it.

Unfortunately the seller will not share those details because it is against policy. Guess it wasn't meant to be. They were a few grand lower, but nothing amazing.
