    Football Jig Experts!!!

The Football jig is something I honestly don't use to often. The lakes I normally fish just do not require this type of jig and cater to more of a grass or arkie style jig. I have a couple tournaments on the schedule this year where the football head seems to shine on deep rock and gravel 15-25 ft. I prefer to tie my own skirts and plan on ordering just naked painted jigs with weed guards. I am pretty set on a 3/4 oz jig for those depth but my question is what type of hook style, Round Bend, Wide Gap, etc. I prefer the round bend on other jigs and don't know if the wide gap is better for this type of situation. Also hook eyes 30 degree flat eye, or straight eye, or 90 degree eyes....which ones??? I plan to order 25-50 jigs and just want the best for what I plan on fishing.

Thanks in advance for all the help

my football jigs have a lighter, flat eye, round bend mustad. but I use lighter, 10-12# line... right now I use the all terrain football jigs... real nice jigs...
    try a 3" chigger for a trailer...
good idea to keep alot on hand cause they do get snagged alot...

These are the best I've found. They have an EWG Gammie hook. I buy em from D&M Custom Baits on eBay. Great jig, Great Hook, great trailer keeper too. That jig has cashed many checks this year!

I have some of these jigheads that are unpainted without the weedguards if you are interested? I had to buy a lot of them and only lost one jig last year so I still have plenty more. I have them in 3/4 and 1oz.

I really like these from Stamina. Sticky sharp Gamakatsu hook and a tang to hold your trailer in place. Best of all, they are only about $1 each. http://www.up-north.com/stamin....html

Updated 12-3-08 - Here's a couple of better pictures of one in the 1/2 oz size - one bare and one dressed. BTW - that's a Stamina skirt too!

Cool! Those look identical to the ones I like! Depending on shipping, maybe cheaper!

Cheaper to keep a kid in tourney fishing than paying attorneys to keep them out of jail !!

    Re: Football Jig Experts!!! (whoza_daddy)

Thanks for all the input. I do already have about a dozen of the ones from Stamina, along with some other good recommendations. Best part is I have a while before this tournament so fish a couple different styles and figure what I prefer.

Again thanks for all the input

I really like the 1/2oz Jewel Heavy Cover Finesse football jig. I usually use a Netbait Paca Chunk or a Baby Brush Hog for a trailer. Great jig!

I was instrumental in testing and design of the Secret Lures MVP Football Head Jig. One of the things I particularly like for fishing the deep, rocky Ozark mountain lakes is the Pivot Divot design it reduces the chances of snagging and allows the jig to rock up providing the craw to pivot into a natural defensive position. I feel it helps create additional bites from sometime stubborn fish. http://www.secretlures.com Features Mustad EWG hook that is very durable but small enough you don't create a bite hole that can rip out when fighting the fish. Actually I very rarely set the hook when fish deep just put pressure on them and and start cranking fast and sweep a couple times prevents the hooks from tearing the thin skin layer inside the mouth where many deep fish are hooked.
