How do you rig your Yamamoto Hula Grubs?

I've tried 1/2 oz football head jigs with a wire guard and 3/8 oz Tru Tungsten weight with a #3 straight shank as a Texas rig. Wondering what you guys are doing and which rig you like better? Thanks all!

I like 1/2 oz football head jigs with a skirt. I rig the grub skirt forward and then have extra material up front for a slower fall. Don't like a weedguard but I'm mainly fishing them on rocky bottoms. Fish them on 15 lb floro.

Fished them rigged with the 1/2 oz football head today off of my boat dock here on Lake Norman in NC. I landed 5 using that rig configuration, lost 2 due to not paying attention and had all clean hook sets on the 5 that I landed. Was using 17# Bass Pro XPS Flourocarbon and flipping as well as pitching to some of the more open sections behind and under the dock.

I'm just getting serious with my jig fishing and love the hula grub bait. It gets me plenty of bites and holds up pretty well to the abuse of casting and flipping heavy cover as my dock is loaded with brush underneath.

I'll try to TX rig some more tomorrow and see how that goes. I trimmed the weed guard back some as the ones that came on the jigs were super thick and stiff. That may have helped with the hook sets. Let me know what you guys think or if you have other rigging ideas. Thanks.

Very versatile baits. Make good jig trailers as mentioned above. Will bulk up the profile a lot.

Open water, deep water - football jighead. 3/8-1oz depending on depth. You can swim the 1oz size fast in deep water or slow water like slow a spinnerbait or crankbait. I always use a weedguard.

Shallow water, thick cover, grass - 5/16-1oz pegged texas rig with a 3/0 (5") or 5/0 (6") reaction innovation bmf hook.

The 5" version is awesome. The 6" is a sleeper as you never hear anyone mention it, but it makes a great flipping bait when everyone tossing tubes and jigs or you are on big fish.

The 4" works well on a shaky head on heavy pressured fish.

I like smoke light red flake, watermelon no flake, cinnamon, green pumkin.

One more thing, don't put the 5" double tail on a carolina rig.....

Really good insight Steve. Thanks for sharing that with us. I've only used the 5" version so far. Have not even seen the 6" yet but like the idea of it for flipping because I bet they have not seen a lot of those like you say.

Color wise, I use Green Pumpkin here mostly or Junebug/Purple as our water is pretty clear most of the time and our fish get a TON of pressure. Anything really non natural looking usually goes untouched so far which is why I'm amazed at how many people continue to throw so many crazy things out there. But the old adage about lures catching fisherman and not fish holds true most of the time huh?

    Thanks again.

Stand up jigheads or footballs. Occasionally on a C-Rig too.

Stand up Jig heads and title shot jig heads ,

as a Jig Trailer as well

When really bored I will put them on a 3/0 EWG and buzz them across the top over pads and weeds for top water action.

I fish the 4" on a simple 1/8 or 1/4 oz. ball head jig...amazing hook up rate!!

I use the Omega Savior jigheads by Omega Custom Tackle. These are the most versatile jigheads on the market in my opinion. It has a screw on keeper with a cone shaped head that comes through cover easily and is flat on the bottom so it will stand up.
