    Ballpark on a tune up?

I have posted before about getting my '88 70hp Rude tuned up. I also need to get some other things checked out, like the tach, and various cables. What should I ask for when I take it in, and does anyone know about how much a tune up and getting it looked over in general should cost?

    Thanks

At our shop, tune up on 3 cylinder is one hour, the shop rate of your dealer will determine how much the labor is.

Plugs, gear lube and fuel filter run about 40 bucks. As for the other items it will depend on what they have to do to check it out...The tach could be bad or just unplugged or it could be the rectifier.

Re: Ballpark on a tune up? (RUSTY63)

could I do this stuff myself? I got a quote of $125 + Parts, and another guy $125+ Parts and about $225-250 if he had to tinker with the carbs....

What can I do myself to get it running better until the winter when i can afford to have it in the shop?

Also I have a prob at very low RPMs at idle speed, and sometimes cranking. I always have to advance the throttle fully for it to fire up and back immediatly and put it in gear or it will bog down and die. Same for forward and reverse. It is esp. a pain when i'm trying to put it back on the trailer. I can't seem to "creep" up to the trailer without it stalling out, and since boats don't have brakes i have to float around wherever i go and get it restarted, then it usually floods. It's also pretty embarrassing. Basically there is play between "N" and having it in gear, i can move the throttle a good ways in either direction before the motor engages, and in this "free zone" is usually where it stalls out.

My main issues are idling out of no wake zones, and firing back up once i've stopped and fished awhile.

Any clue, or do i need to be more clear with my prob?

    Thanks so much

Josh, I dont know your ability's, you may be able to perform the work needed on your motor.

For your wont idle problem, the first thing I would do is check the compression, then look at the sync and link, check the cylinder head temp and if all that is good I would look in the carbs.

Even building those carbs is not bad, I did mine in my 70 Johnson, it was an 86 model. I put Boyesens in mine which helped alot with idle, mine did not like to idle either, but would idle all day when the hose was hooked up. I know my V6 now is sensitive to engine trim, try keeping it level, that seems to help mine alot.

125 plus parts isn't to bad. I paid about 275 or so for a tune up and water pump replacement. And that was a while ago. Watch out for Aeromarine though, they told me they had a 3 week wait, and I had to leave the boat there. I am not to fond of that idea.

I need to look and see if I have the manual for that engine, I know I have a starter somewhere.

onemore question... I was talkin to some guys at work that have experience with boats. They told me that i do not need to run my boat at WOT b/c Johnson/Evinrudes weren't supposed to turn so many RPMs. I'm turning 5700 with a full load at about 41GPS with a 19p prop. Am I goin to blow it up? I don't run it WOT all the time. I dont' wanna ruin it....

I think that engine likes to turn in that range. I know I wound the crap out of mine, it had a 15 pitch prop on a 15 footer, and ran about 35 to 40. I went everywhere at WOT too.

i figured it wouldn't be hurting it. I'm runnin a 19p bout to move up to a 20 or 21, everyone thinks i'm an idiot and don't know what i'm talkin about b/c i've only been "boating" for a few months...i dunno....i've learned alot here

The operating range is 5500 to 6000 on your motor.

Re: Ballpark on a tune up? (Josh256v)

You will probably turn more RPM's when it cools off too. I think that is one of the reasons I have been funked out about mine. I test drove it on a cool day, and every day I have had it out, its been hotter then heck.

Don't load it down though, I think turning more RPMS is better then turning to little.
