Actual HP numbers for newer / older v6 motors?

I was wondering ... do the current 150 V6 motors have the HP ratings at the prop or crank?

    What about a 1998 model?

    What about a 1988 model?

My reason for asking is that my 1998 model Rude seems to have a lot more punch than the last 150 that I had, which was a 1988 model. And I drove a newer 150 recently that seemed to have more zip than the 1998. Did they change the method of rating the HP?

For over 25 years the hp is rated at the propshaft

Seahorse - I thought I had heard something about the late 90's engines which had a 10% bump in published HP. So a 150 actually put out 165. I might be dreaming though.

Did the powerhead configuration (60* vs 90*) cause a change in performance in comparable HP engines? Or perhaps they changed the gear ratios? Maybe it's just me and my imagination, but it "seems" like I can tell a noticeable difference .....

I believe HP measurements swapped from crank to prop in 1983-ish era. A '88 150 and a '98 150 are two completely differnent animals though. the 60* v6 was a really nice engine.

Some of the 91 and 92 model 150's were a bit underrated and a rather hot engine until Merc cried foul and had to be detuned....

Steve, the newer than 98 was a Ficht or DI? Those motors that are direct injected are some more hosses!!! I love my 03 DI 225, That thing makes my 225 carb engine look sick!!!!! They're showing the same HP at the prop but the low end grunt is awesome!! Especially the 90* blocks!!

It was a DI Mike. Friend has one on a ... are you ready for this ... 20' Norris Craft. It was hard to believe the effectiveness that the 150 had on that hull, even though it is a light boat. The mid-range punch was way better than I expected.

I was told the 91 fastrikes were considered one of the hot models and as long as it never went back to be serviced it still is I have one of those according to the head numbers someone once posted....

Bro in law had a Norris Craft with a worked 200 that was a screamer!! You're right, the first time I felt the lowend grunt and midrange punch.....I was SOLD!!!

Any OMC/BRP, Mercury and Yamaha motor from 1985-Current = propshaft HP rating.

I thought ALL manufacturers had to rate the HP at the propshaft starting in 1985, but I have heard some that swear the "Force" motors were still rated at the power-head post 1985.

I honestly don't know for sure about that claim.
