I am getting check engine alarm and motor goes into SLOW. It's code 25 - ECU overheating. This has happened to me from time to time, usually after I have been trolling for long time. When it happens, I usually just shut down the motor for a while and then start it up and get going without any issues. The other day I was trolling again and the alarm went off sooner than normal (there was more load on the boat than normal, dragging buckets to slow down trolling speed). My usual approach of shuting it down and letting it cool off didn't work.
Any idea what could be causing this and where I should start (vapor separator)? I do not have diagnostic s/w or cable but have reached out to the dfitech guys to buy that.
Motor model is: J175FTLECS
SN#: G04524169
05/98
Generally, the motor is very strong, runs well at high rpm and gets out of a hole instantly.
A little more background, maybe unrelated: Several weeks ago I started getting a ticking sound, both at idle and in gear. I assumed it was a dirty injector or carbon buildup. Since then, I started using Shell V-power fuel, added seafoam addditive to the fuel, replaced the fuel filter/water separator, sprayed 2 cans of seafoam through intake/heads - let it soak, etc, and replaced plugs (gapped and indexed). The ticking sound is still there.
Not sure if the two items are related or not.
I'd appreciate any feedback.
Thanks!
