Need Some Evinrude Help

I know this isn’t the right spot for this post but I’m hoping the circumstances can assist me as I know a lot of people read this feed.

I am a member of South Carolina Emergency Response Task Force. We respond to natural disasters. (IE. We went to Louisiana twice last year for hurricanes). I am on the boat team. Currently we are in the market for new motors but we all know how that’s going right now. We have 2012 Evinrude E40DRLIN motors, 9 to be exact. We use them on our flood and moving water boats. We are smoking prop shafts. These boats are driven in neighborhoods and streets during flooding to rescue victims. Currently we have 3 that have bad shafts. Weirdly, the hubs are fine but the shaft is what’s being damaged. We cannot find parts and to rebuild it is about 10k a piece. Does anyone have any advice or help they can offer that is constructive and not get rid of it. It is hurricane season we need everything we have.

rebuild is 10K, hell you can buy a new 40 for that or less.

See if there is any grant money thru FEMA and get new motors, those are 10 yrs old anyway

If the shaft is bent, it can be removed and straightened on a press and V blocks. Of course this isn't the preferred method of repair but it has been done in a pinch.

Sounds like the city/county just needs to pony up some money for new Mercury’s , maybe they could go from 40HP down to 25 and save a little.

I'm guessing ^that is the problem.... Guy I know who builds rollcages built some for one of the federal agencies. He was told to charge extra because they would be a pita. He charged 2.5-3x normal rate. Proceeded to spend more time over the next year (it took that long) to get paid than on the cages themselves. He wouldn't touch one again for less than 5-10x his normal rate because of how much work it was to get paid and his year wait for payment.

When you can sell everything right now why tie up money with the government and deal with all the hassle.

You can't get any right now, trust me I've got one ordered. Too bad Fred just left the board, no doubt he'd have info on getting shafts with all his connections.

Perhaps contact Evinrude to see if the dealers have that motor in the back, blown powerhead or something, that you could possibly buy the lower units.

Call McCurry's outboards in Anderson SC. He can get you a new Tohatsu.

Get some larger motors, and go to jet drives. They are safer around people in the water anyhow.

Floating debris on a street team could be an issue.
