30 hp Evinrude won't start... HELP!!

1988 (i think) 30 hp Evinrude long shaft will not start. i've replaced the ignition switch, had the starter rebuilt (new brushes), replaced the solenoid, and the battery is good. I'm getting good voltage everywhere but when i turn the key, the bendix spins but doesnt kick up against the flywheel. It's sort of acting like its grounded out somewhere and the solenoid wont click. I noticed a melted wire on the rectifier on the other side of the motor but i've replaced that and still nothing. I was able to jump from the battery straight to the starter hot post and it cranked, but i tried it again and it only spins the bendix and wont engage. Could it be the rectifier? I figured that since that only comes into play after the ignition, it shouldnt be the problem. Does anyone have a wiring diagram for this motor or know where i can find one? Anyone have any ideas? I've been out of the water for about 2 weeks and its killing me. Any ideas or help would be GREATLY appreciated! I will post the model # later if it's needed, i'm at work right now and dont have access to it. Thanks yall!

The problem sounds like you have a bad starter or bendix. Was thestarter rebuilt by a good autoelectric shop that would test the starter. If it is spinning fast enough but the bendix is not engaging then the bendix is bad. You can use WD40 to clean them and apply a light oil to lubricat,. I have used reel oil like hot sauce and it works well.

the starter was rebuilt by a good starter shop, and was tested. the bendix spins, but not fast... sort of like a dead battery, but the battery is good. the thing that boggles me is that i have jumped it straight from the battery to the starter and bypassed the solenoid and everything else and it started right up and ran fine. if it was a problem inside the starter, it wouldn't have started when jumped, right?

You may have a bad cable, Battery to solenoid or solenoid to starter. It sounds as if you have replaced everything else an it starts when you bypass the cables. Check voltage while cranking at the battery then both sides of the solenoid then at the starter and see if you get a large drop at any of the connections.

I feel like an idiot. Ended up being bad ends on my ground cable, cut the ends off and went straight to the copper wire and it started right up. CHECK YOUR CABLES BEFORE YOU BUY PARTS! Hope this will help someone else in the future.

Another issue that rears its head occasionally:- Wing Nuts securing cables to battery = loose bad connections. Get rid of wing nuts & replace with stainless steel NYLOC NUTS. Tighten securely. Loose connections can/will take out your computer (EMM) or Alternator or power pack. Don't get caught.

Think Danrude told you to check that awhile back.

Re: 30 hp Evinrude won't start... HELP!! (ChampioNman)

I checked all the cables after I read his post, and there was no voltage drop. Checked a couple days later and it went from 12.6 to 10.3 thru the ground cable, then checked continuity and that wasn't good. Apparently the first time I checked it, I managed to hit a good spot on the cable ends? Heck, I don't know, it's runnin pretty well now so I'm thankful. The next issue to tackle is a timing issue I believe. Sometimes it will jump right up and plane out, and sometimes it will get to half throttle and it has a rythmic cut out like I'm hitting a rev limiter. Prop is not slipping nor am I experiencing blow out, the cavitation plate is fully submerged and it's peeing. When that happens, I throttle down, switch to neutral, cut it off, then start it back up and most of the time that solves it... It's just kind of aggrivating.
