    Regret updating to 2.280

I bit the bullet and decided to update my Helix 9 MSI G3N to 2.280. Software update went perfectly fine. But for some reason, Basemap won’t install no matter what I do. I have an email out to hummingbird tech support and just waiting for a response. So now I have new software but no Basemap. Any recommendations?

I use lakemaster, would Basemap even come into play?

Thank you in advance. I am a newbie as I just got my unit.

The unit software deleted the Humminbird Basemap which is the 2017 coverage of Lakemaster with no HD contours.

The new Basemaps has the same coverage plus the coverage of CoastMaster maps with no HD contours.

The basemap download is a ZIP folder. You have the unzip (extract) the files from that folder and put the 6 files on a memory card to load to the unit.

A Lakemaster card would have more detail for the HD coverage waters and would automatically be the mapping the unit would use. So it makes no difference if you install the new basemap or not. At no time would both be read at the same time. If you are out of the regional coverage you Lakemaster card has, the new basemap would be of some use.

Thanks Wayne!! I downloaded the basemap and extracted all files from the folder. I copied all 6 files on to my micro sd card with no issues. I loaded the micro sd card into the unit and I get no response. Is it missing the boot file to have the unit automatically detect the install? I don't know, I even tried on windows, mac, multiple sd cards..etc..etc.. and nothing. But the software update worked just fine.

Glad to know that a basemap isn't even needed if I am using lakemaster. That eases my mind a bit. But what happens if I am not on a lake that is not on the great plains lakemaster card?

I would suggest you re-download the basemap software again and try to load that.

If you are in the Great Lake Region and it is not on your Lakemaster card, it won't be on the Basemap either if your Lakemaster card is at least a 2017 issue= guess you will get lost.

AND you can check the coverage that Navionics has buy looking at the actual maps on the Navionics website's Chart Viewer.

THEN there is Auto Chart and Auto Chart Live to make your own contour maps if there is not a digital map where you want one.

Sounds like basemap isnt even needed if lakemaster is the source. So that isnt too bad. Using Auto Chart and Auto Chart live will help since basemap wont be there. At least I have options.

Just a little ticked spending $1500 on a unit and something as simple as updating isnt working. HB needs to figure out a way to have the unit attach directly to the PC/MAC to do the update instead of sd cards.

There is another way, the FishSmart App Bluetoothed to your Helix. BUT the basemap has to be done via memory card.

Yep, I checked the FishSmart app and it showed my unit is updated to 2.280. I did read the directions that basemap 1.031 can not be updated through the app the HB website. So i did the 2.280 and basemap update through sd card. It read the 2.280 update just fine and installed it. The HB directions said it would automatically ask if I was to update basemap to 1.031 after the 2.280 update, but it never did.

I installed the 2.280 software in several units.
The basemap file for the Helix 7 is 1.6GB and was no problem to download and install.
The base map for the 9, 10, 12 is over 5GB and I could not download it with my internet connection it would time out at 3.5 GB.
Robert put it on Google Drive and that worked so I have installed the basemap in a couple of units with no issue. Still have the files on a memory card to do other units.

Yeah, it was like 5.4 GB. I have fast internet so it didn't take much time. It didn't time out or anything. I was able to download it one our MAC and Windows and extract the files. I am willing to try anything at this point. Anyway to get access to the google drive?

I updated my 10” units with the Basemaps but held off on installing it on my 12” units. Going to wait a little while to see others comments good or bad. I won’t ever be using the Basemap so it’s not worth loading it yet. Still hoping for a newer update to correct some of the issues with the 2.180 update.

I dont blame you, I would wait to. I use lakemaster cards also, but having something you paid for is what I am more upset about..lol..below is what I just got from tech support at HB, which I knew wasnt right. They are saying I HAVE to HAVE basemap for the unit to work.

I have in my lap now, a Helix 12 CHIRP MEGA SI+ GPS G3N. I have updated the unit software to 2.280.
In the SYSTEM STATUS view it has no Humminbird Basemap version number displayed, I have not installed the new basemap.
Still has the Humminbird Basemap menu item in the Chart/Map Source.

I have used this unit a few times since the update with no issues.
Lakemaster has no coverage where I fish so I use Navionics or Auto Chart Live.

I have some Chart Select maps of lakes I rarely go to and those are read by the unit.
When I insert a Chart Select card in, an extra Map Source is added ( Humminbird Legacy). In that setting or Auto, the unit reads the Chart Select map.

I am not going to install the new basemap in this unit so I have a reference for threads like this.

I was surprised by the response I got after talking to you. I would figure tech support at HB would know what lakemaster card would work even if basemap was not installed. I also still have HB Basemap as an option for chart selection even though in system status I do not have a basemap version and just a software version.

You have your unit software updated and you have a Lakemaster map card.
You have your own test lab, don't take anyone's word about it, DO IT.

Very true. Going to go out this weekend to make sure LM will work fine without the basemap installed.

I also have a Helix 9 MDI G2N that I updated to version 2.280 which updated fine. I followed the instructions and loaded the base map update onto the proper 32 SD card. The card is installed in the left card slot, when the unit is turned on the pop up comes up and ask if I would like to update the base map version .0000 to version 1.031. I select yes then nothing happens. I have loaded the update files to to different SD cards with the same result.
The systems screen shows system software as 2.280 and base map version as .0000. The new base map doesn't load. I'm glad that I didn't do this update during the fishing season as I would be freaking out even though I don't use the Lakemaster charts. I would like to have my unit updated properly.
