In need of some help. busted lower unit.

    Hey guys,

my lower unit on my 07 Etec 225 Ho went out on me last weekend, they say its completly shot. is this something an insurance company would usally cover? the motor was out of warranty as of last year. i didnt hit anything in the water with it...just something internally went bad. question is, i have a tournament in less than 2 weeks, where should i be looking so i can get back on the water ASAP???

    Thanks, Matt

Any water in the gear oil? Insurance won't cover unless you hit something. For a quick fix, an SEI case for around 900.00 with 3 year warranty can get ya back on the water...MAYBE in time... Eddie Pope aka Gearcase man can maybe help in your timeframe. His # is in the E/J forum under helpful tips...

Here is what I know about insurance paying for a lower unit. The damage has to be caused by a collision of some sort. Have them check it before you say you did not hit anything. I had one go out and I did not hit anything when it went out but had hit a stump 5 or so months before. It cracked a tooth. The crack had some rust in it and the mechanic stated that the damage was caused by that even though it did not go out at the time. Insurance paid for it based on the mechanic's report and a picture. I would get it in ASAP and have it looked at.

Just look at the propshaft and see if it's bent, this would indicate an object was hit. The cracked or broken tooth on a gear is not necessarily from an object being hit. This will occur due to gear breakdown which is prone to happen naturally.

From what I understand, the factory is not sending out any more H.O.'s It seems they are going to the magnum as replacements. This may not be the gospel, so don't hold me to this, but anyway, I still have a few H.O.'s left around here somewhere if you ever need to go that route. They are good handling cases, but do have a reputation of being short lived.
