    Spark advance 1994 225 Venom

How hard is it to replace the spark advance link assembly. My old one is broken at the adjustment screw. I have the replacement part. After its replaced I'm guessing that it has to be adjusted... and that might be a little beyond my abilities. Is this another leave it for the pros kinda job. 1994 Johnson 225 J225STLERK

Not hard to replace, but you will need to run the boat on the test wheel to set the idle timing back...

Yeah... maybe I better toss the part in a box with the other stuff for the mechanic.

Measure your old one and set the new one to the same distance you should be real close. Check it with a timing light in neutral at 900 RPM.

Ok... I'll take a look in the service manual for the timing light procedure.

Of course, I'm not quite ready to fire this thing up you know... still in the process of recovery.

At the moment all of the electrical, gas and oil lines and the control cables are disconnected waiting for me to get the motorwell boot problem sorted out. (I'm gonna have to get a metal ring made for that boot... the T&H boot came with a vinyl/plastic ring and won't bend over the splashwell lip)

And... I still have to go thru the carbs, etc, etc...

But I guess I can go ahead and change out the spark advance and then check it after I've got the motor running.

    Thanks Fred

Pretty easy mark the flywheel TDC hook the light to #1 plug and shoot it should be real close one turn equals one degree. What about the trim and tilt caps?

You lucked out and got the easy to adjust model.

The screw on the end is your idle rpm adjustment.

First make sure the sync and link is correct per the manual and the carbs adjusted correctly. Then you turn the screw to set your idle rpm in gear to 650-750 rpm. Most boat tachs are not real accurate at that low rpm, so it's best to use a shop tach.

Still needs to be done. I need to get ... or make... the spanner wrench.

I need to take a week off from work!

UK plays today... probably won't get much done... gotta cheer 'em on... even though I'm a die hard Cards fan!
