What would cause the magnets in a flywheel to break?

I just got back from the boat mechanic and he showed me my flywheel and the magnets were demolished. Also where it fits in on the motor there were a couple of rivets the thing had dug in. What would cause this? If I have them put a new flywheel on is it likely to happen again? He told me he had only seen that happen like 3 or 4 times ever. Thanks, terrence.

worn upper crankshaft bearing causing the flywheel to hit the stator or wing nuts on a battery and running with a damaged regulator. That overheats the stator and melts the plastic insulation and can damage flywheel in some cases.

Had to replace mine too. I felt like maybe it was because I had several agressive lower unit failures. Not sure though.
