    Anyone here go camping???

My son (about to turn 5) has been taught about camping in pre-school, saw my tent in a hunting season picture at my house, and now he wants to go "real camping".

Problem is - I'm new to San Antonio, and have no idea where to go camping in a tent. I want to take him someplace that is semi-primative - it's his first time, so we ain't gonna try sleepin' under the stars or nothing like that. Just a nice clean place fairly close to civilization that we can pitch a tent, light a fire and roast some marshmellows.

Also... probably shouldn't do this for a few months.. huh? Wouldn't want to sweat to death in our sleep. Can anyone recommend the best time to go? In VA, I always went early to mid fall or late spring / early summer.

    All the best,
    Glenn

It will cool off by December, maybe.

Your real close to some beautiful scenery, should be a good place to go that's close.

Texas has alot of State Parks, with some of them being in remote places.

Ditto on the State Parks ... In San Antonio, you are right on the border for 3 of the TPWD regions. Region 6 would probably have some of the more scenic parks like Garner.

Not very primative, but dont forget Calliham Park at Choke Canyon. I am sure your son will enjoy the wildlife.

Thanks Jeremy. I was planning on going to Choke Canyon soon anyway, so that will be worth looking into.

Take him to Garner State Park and let him float the Frio. It's really low right now, so maybe next summer. The park is nice in the fall, but the water will be too cold to enjoy. Goose Island State Park at Rockport is a popular place where a bunch of Norfers spend the winter. Then you can get a little fishing in.

We've had a bunch of folks from San Antonio head up to Junction and camp at Morgan Shady Park the last 2 Springs. It's on the river and pretty nice under a bunch of pecan trees--gotta have some shade. The lady there can give you some outfitters names where you and your son can rent canoes or kayaks and do a float trip and get some fishing in. The water is cold and clear up there.

No camp fires there though. Might have to do the marshmellows over a grill. Welcome to San Antonio.

If you head out to Choke watch out for the lizards they tend to get pretty big.

??? By "lizards", do you mean alligators, or did this one just go over my head?

Thanks for all the responses everyone. I greatly appreciate it.

By chance... did that area used to be called the "5 fingers area" before you saw the gator?

Was there several years back when me and my friend came upon a gator ever bit as long as his 19ft Bass Cat.
