    1996 Johnson 175 with little use the last two years. Problems

    I am looking at buying a 1996 stratos boat that has a 1996 Johnson 175hp. The boat has been used very little the last two years. Been in a garage when not used. Other than a compression test what else should I have checked out or be worried about on a motor that has not been run much at all in that time? Also what is the proper compression for this motor? Thanks for any help you can give me.

    Possible fuel issues if the motor wasn't stored properly, possible carb issues as well. Comp should be close to 100 psi. Just want to make sure the are all within 10% of each other.

    Thanks for the help. How can I check for fuel or carb issues either at the mechanic or on the lake. Worst case scenario what would a repair like this run approx. Thanks

    Carb rebuild kits are approx $30.00 X 6 plus shop labor rate. They could charge one hour per carb.

    I just bought a boat a couple weeks ago that had been sitting for 2 years. I would advise to use seafoam and clean it up a bit first before taking first compression test or the results are not going to be accurate (mine were low until after I seafoamed it and let it idle for about 5 mins). I also just cleaned the carberators this weekend. They actually were not that bad so more than likely it was stored properly. In my opinion the carbs are not that hard to take apart and clean and inspect for damaged parts. I would advise mixing your gas 50:1 unil you are confident the vro is working properly. Personally I would disable the oil side of the pump and just premix for assurance...powerheads are not cheap! If you have any other questions please let me know.
