    92 285 pro steering cable

    Hi all,

I have a 92 285 pro that I just had the chance to get on the water today and the steering was so stiff the only way I could turn the wheel was to get it up on plane, and it was still amazingly stiff so that was the end of the day. Is a new cable needed or anyone know a way of cleaning /lubing it? What would a new cable cost (DYI)? Any help will be great.

or hydraulic steering. I made the switch on mine several yrs ago because I had a cable getting stiff. With the exception of replacing a seal, it has been trouble free since.

Hi- I have the same boat w/ the older "duel rack" system. Just changed mine this spring. It is not too difficult to change. Actually a lot easier then I thought it would be. Disconnect and pull your old cables (tie a rope to the end so you can feed them back through) and look for the model/size stamped on them. If its the older duel rack like mine be sure to order the correct cables. The newer ones will not work on the older rack systems. Check online for cables. I got both my cables for under $200 total, shipped to my door. Have a buddy help by pulling the rope out of the rigging hole while you feed them from under the console and along the side. If you don't mind doing the work yourself it takes about 2 hrs total to pull & install new. You will be amazed at the difference fresh cables make. Good luck.

Went hydraulic earlier this year and don't regret a thing. Installed myself and there are some good deals out there.
