I had the same issue. Check your timing roller on top of the motor. It should be touching the cam when in neutral. It cured mine.
Only other thing I can think about is a leaking PH to Mid section gasket that is sucking air when you trim up.
Over the years, the former OMC had several "fixes" for that problem, depending on the year and model.
It will take some digging thru old service literature to find out if anything applies to your engine. Has it been doing this for the last 10 years, or did it just start? It may only need the idle needles richened up 1 turn or the midrange air bleed jets reduced 6 sizes.

Definately get the sinc and link checked, cam roller, throttle shafts. Have the engine checked for minor air leak problems. Check the maintenance valve for a good seal. Make sure its not cracked. Next time you try it,touch the primer and see if the situation improves any. If it does, you may only have to adjust the needles, as SEAHORSE said. It could also be that it is time for a fuel system overhaul, in 10 years, a lot of little things could be adding up.![]()

The " EI " in the model number says that your motor is a 1991, not a 1996. IF that is the case, the factory back then had a service diagram that a dealer could get faxed to him that showed the carb core plug that had to be removed and one of the calibration holes enlarged by about .002".
Back then it was called affectionately the "get on the trailer fix".

I don't know who the hell this John from IL is, but it's nice to know that he's got my back, especially when he pulls 15 year old service info out of his hat. Thanks, John.
I do remember this in ONLY for the 91 and 92 (and maybe early '93) V-6 60° engines that did NOT have adjustable carburetors.

Just a thought but are you running a Renegade prop? My 1999 175 did that until I switched to a Tempest. In my case it was the prop slip with the Gade.
Wow, have I been away long enough to lose my siggy?
