    2001 250 fichts oil leaks

I am glad I found this site and hope someone may be able to answer a question.I have twin 2001 250 fichts on a 28 ft hydrasort center console.I will have a small stream of oil run from under the lower cowling on the front side of the engine and down the mid unit after a day of fishing(good bit of trolling). It does it on both engines. The transom and engines at water level will be covered in fairly thick film of oil.Is this normal?I haven't been able to find any leaks of any kind although there is a decent amount of oil in the airbox.I just can't recall seeing other boats with a transom and engine covered in oil like this. Thanks for any help.

Wipe your hand around the oil injector area where the black injector mates with the aluminum housing with all the hoses on it. If there is a heavy film of oil, there may be an oring leakage. You may also find oil dripping from the bottom of the injector because of this.

Contact a dealer who can contact the tech support group about this problem. Some can be fixed without having to replace the oil injector assembly.

Whitecap, let me first say I'm not the expert here, these guys know there stuff. I have a 150 Ficht and I was getting oil around the front of the engine, it was coming out in the area of the airbox. After some advice from the guys here I changed the oil I was using and haven't had the problem since. Seems I was getting oil coming back out from the intakes into the air box and then it was running out the bottom. Everything works great now.

seahorse I will check the oil pump this afternoon.

Kbass I am using xd 50 now. What oil were you using and what did you change to?When I pulled the airbox off last weekend there was a decent amount of oil in each of the intakes before the butterfly.

Thanks to both of you for your help

I would bet it is blowback coming out the throttle bodies, I have heard of this on pre bmc motors. In 2002 BMC changed a bushing or something in the throttle bodies and it stopped this. It is more noticable if you idle alot and it drips out when the motor is tilted for storage. You can anchor down some oil absorbing material inside to soak it up or buy new throttle bodies.

Re: 2001 250 fichts oil leaks (Mark from NY)

I was finally able to clean the engines up good and get out and run it for a while. The oil is all coming from blowback through the intakes. We ran for 30-45 minutes and trolled for another hour or so and the transom and engines are covered in oil.I tilted the engines up for the ride home and when I got back there was a steady stream of oil from under the lower cowling to the foot of the on both motors.I pulled the plastic intake covers and oil was pooled in the bottom of them again. Is changing the throttle bodies out going to be the answer to fixing this?Any idea on cost or if the existing throttle bodies can be repaired?I am running x50 oil now. Thanks for any help.

Is the drain hose in good shape and hooked up to the air box with no kinks in it. It should "suck out" most of the oil. Some folks cut to size an oil absorbant pad and fasten it to the bottom of the motor pan.

You can reach under the throttle bodies and touch the bottom of the shafts and feel where the oil is dripping from. Throttle body replacement from a 2002 or later motor would be the only, but expensive, fix.

Re: 2001 250 fichts oil leaks (SEAHORSE)

SEAHORSE I checked the drain lines and they seemed to be clear.I will check again.I thought about putting the oil mat in the pan to contain it and probably will until I can fix it..My mine concern is the amount of oil I am using.I am going through twice as much as I should be.Any rough idea what costs would be or a source to find used ones? Thanks again.

Re: 2001 250 fichts oil leaks (SEAHORSE)

The first trip I made in the boat in august we burned roughly 140 gallons of gas and 3.50 gallons of oil.I thought it should have been around 2.75-3.0 gals.I had the engines checked and everything came back normal as far as oil ratios set in the computer.I brought it back home and topped off the oil tanks again.I have made two trips since then. The first was around 30 minutes of cruise at 4k and some idling around. The second was 35-40 minutes of running and an hour or so of trolling.Total hour or so running and another hour and a half trolling.I haven't topped the gas tank off yet but judging by the gauge 40-45 gallons gas.It took over a gallon to fill the oil tanks back up.

The black mat in the lower cowling is covered in oil,the plastic cover has oil in it, and oil is dripping off the bottom of the butterfly shaft. If I run it on the hose and then take the plastic cover off you can see a small stream of oil running down the intake tract past the butterfly. When I tilt the motor up after running it oil streams down the mid unit from under the lower cowling to the lower unit.I am having to clean the transom and engines with simple green after every trip to get rid of the thick oil ring left after running. It is making a mess and I hate wasting so much oil at 16 dollars a gallon. It is not using twice as much as it should, but a good bit more than I thought it would. We will start making trips shortly where we may burn 200 gallons of gas or more and I will have to top off the tanks on the water. Thanks

Re: 2001 250 fichts oil leaks (whitecap)

What you may have is a kinked return hose, a restricted oil pressure regulator, or an internally leaking oil injector, or thermostats making the motor run too cool.

An oil pressure gauge hooked up per the manual and run at all speeds will tell if there is an overpressure problem. The injector leakage test should also be performed.

Using an infrared temp gun will check each cylinder head for proper thermostat operation , and pinching off both lines from the pressure relief valve will tell if it is leaking internally by the engine's increase in idle temp.

I appreciate you taking the time to answer these questions. It is strange to me that both engines have the same issues with oil.Does anyone have a recommendation of a good ficht mechanic in atlanta or surrounding area?

i have a similar problem on a johnson venom 225, a small drip coming from the cowl and running down the transom. periodically does it, mechanic said all is good, and it always runs good. doesnt seem to be quite as heavy a flow as yours, but good luck to you.
