    Synthetic lower unit oil?

Are their any negatives to running synthetic LU oil? Motor is about a year and a half old so I'd say the unit is broken in.

    Thanks, Bill

I have heard nothing but positives about running sythetic LU lube. I just started using Amsoil LU lube this year and haven't had any issues. I guess the only negative would be the cost. But, I'll gladly pay more for better protection.

I've been running synthetic for a few years now, Bill. Go for it, and you might even gain another 100 RPMs.

Thanks guys. That's one of the things I was told was that I'd pick up some rpm's. Appreciate the quick feedback!

Bill, I run the Amsoil marine gear lube in my old Yamaha lower unit and I love it. When I drain and refill now, I don't have the metallic powder on the plug like I did before.

My ProV 150 lower unit uses a little over a quart. I think it's about 34-35 oz. Yours is probably about the same.

Yeah, mine takes just over a quart. One word of warning. If you decide to use Amsoil, make sure your hand pump fits the bottle if you use one. I have one of the cheap hand pumps for the lower unit. The Amsoil bottles are bigger on top than a standard 1 qt oil bottle. Luckily, I had an almost empty regular 1 qt bottle laying around, so I just poured the Amsoil in the and pumped it from there into the LU.

If you buy 2 qts, you'll have close to 3/4 qt left over. I'll only buy 1 qt next spring when I do it again.

What type of hand pump do you have? What is the best one to use?

Same here. One of my brother inlaws is a chemical engineer that helped with the development of royal purple products.I run their oil in my old cars as well.
