Nope. However, a lot will depend on how you run it. If you run WOT all the time, the fuel economy will suck. If you keep it in the 4000-5000 RPM range most of the time, you won't see that much difference. What you will notice is that the oil consumption will be much higher on the Yamaha.
NOPE, I just came from running a Mercury Optimax and my Fuel usage and oil usage has all most doubled with this 300 hp Yamaha, now in all fairness, I was running a Mercury 225 hp Optimax. But I did not expect double fuel and oil usage with the 75 hp more Yamaha. Boat should not be a factor, 225 hp pushed a 21'5" Ranger, now this 300 is pushing a 22'2" Ranger.
No matter what, if you are coming from a carb or EFI motor then you will think you have a refinery under your cowl. All DFI's are good, some a little more than others but they are ALL good compared to Carb/EFI's
The weight of your hull and how much stuff you carry will also play a big factor along with how you drive the boat. But i would have to agree that most the motors are real close in MPG.
It is ironic but I had a 2001 Optimax on my last boat and have a 08 HPDI 250 on my new one.
I wouldnt trade it for the world but the Yamaha will suck the gas down WAY worse than the Opti. Good gas mileage was the ONLY thing I liked about the Merc.
I remember the Opti being better than the HPDI and ETEC but on the average it wasn't by a very large margin. What gives to all these gas sucking Yamaha's?
5.8 mpg best cruise for the VMAX (series 1) vs 6.2 for the Opti (225 hp)
Doesn't look like a HUGE difference to me???![]()
The HPDI will use a lot more gas below 2000rpm than E-TEC or Optimax. HPDI does not have stratified combusion mode which makes a big difference. For most people, this fact alone will add at least 0.5 gallons per hour to their average fuel consumption.
HPDI is not the most advanced DI two stroke. Nothing wrong with them but they aren't going to be fuel economy champs.
A 3.3L 225hp is detuned to make the 10% rule. I think this the reason the engine a bullit proof on the hard parts.
