    Bent Prop shaft

I was idling thru some stumps and my prop hit one and killed the motor.Started it up and ran 15 minutes to the ramp. After putting the boat on the trailer I always spin the prop and noticed it has a slight wobble now.Don't notice it when running but is it worth having replaced and don't even know what it costs.99' Vmax 225

Well, just the prop shaft alone is about $200. Additional seals and oil and Oh-By-The-Way parts will be another $100. Do you have another prop to try on the shaft? Maybe it's the prop and not the shaft. It'll probably run you about $400-$500 to replace the shaft if you take it to a shop. If you don't feel any vibration in the motor and it's not scraping the prop barrel on the case it's probably not worth worrying about. In the area you run it in you're likely to do it again the day after you replaced it anyway.

    Re: Bent Prop shaft (kensafishin)

When I first saw this post, I thought it was one of my buddies making fun of me.

I fish in a lake full of stumps and it seems like i bend at least one prop shaft a year. So far, so good :) Anyway, I can tell you - running a bent prop shaft now will cost you a lower unit later. I had a shaft that was bent "ever so slightly" and just barely put a wobble on the prop. Well, there is a small gear inside there on the back of the shaft that is attached to some kind of washer. That washer will wear and the gear will jam and the lower unit will make all sorts of noise - sounding a lot like a train crash.

Best thing: Just get it swapped. Running with that thing out of balance will put a lot of stress on parts that just don't need to be stressed.

The vibration alone from a prop or bent propshaft will get you a new gearcase. Just because you don't feel it doesn't mean it's not there. Get it check out!

Just dropped it off at the shop and they will try to straighten first but may have to get a new one.I just need to trim it all the way up and be more careful.

Got the shaft straightened. It has no wobble to it at all,$50. The mechanic said Yamahas bend pretty easily and they straighten out just as easily.

How did they do it for $50 - Did they straighten it in place or pull the prop shaft and straighten. Sounds like the price I got to straighten once I pulled the prop shaft and handed it to them. If in place, do you know what technique they used, cheater pipe or hammer on high end?

    Re: Bent Prop shaft (kensafishin)

I was at a tourney the other week, and a guy hit a shoal during the pre-fish. He bent two plades, tore off the skeg, and bent the shaft. The local engine shop dropped the lower unit, and pulled the shaft. They put the shaft on a lathe, heated it up, and spun it straight. I was sceptical, but I saw the finished shaft, and it was perfect. Total cost for everything, $200.
