Melvin, I shoot a .223 700 PS quite a bit. If it has the 1:9 twist barrel you can't beat the Sierra 69gr. BTHP. If not, try the 55 gr. bullets.

Are you reloading for it yourself or looking for off the shelf ammo? I'd try a 55 gr V-max to start myself, if you're loading yourself give Ramshot TAC powder a shot....it meters great and in everything I've tried so far it produces excellent groups.

55 gr Vmax with TAC would be my first load for sure. That combo is great for accuracy as well as results on coyotes.....not always the most fur friendly option but they drop quickly. Being a 788 that should be a very accurate rifle as well, they were odd rifles with the rear lugs but boy they shot nice. I'd still like to have a 788 in .44 mag.

If you shooting trash animals and not collecting pelts, I'll second the suggestion to use a 50 or 55 grain Hornady Vmax bullet.

I use 55 grain Vmax bullets in my .22-250 and it produces some very wicked results. If you're not a reloader, Hornady loads their own ammo and it's some of the best factory ammo that I've ever fired through my guns.

You might give the Speer 52gr hollow point a try, I've used it in 222, 223, 22-250 and 220 swift. Never had a bobcat, coyote or anything else complain. Dad used to load them for whitetails in the 22-250 and they worked fine for that too. If that 788 won't shoot for you, let me know. I'd give it a good home next to 6 of it's brothers. Hehe
