Can I replace the remote control box myself?

Has anyone replaced a remote control box? Can a guy do it himself? I have a 1990 Yamaha Pro V 150 with the 703 Remote Control Box. Thanks

It's a relatively easy job. Should have a shift cable attached to it, a throttle cable if you don't use a hot foot, and possibly a neutral safety switch which is just a simple wire connection.

Just watch where and how everything comes off the old box and you'll be fine.

Thanks, I more worried about the electrical. I was told it is difficult to remove the old cables and it's best to leave them and wire them to the new box. Would that be alot of electrical work?

OH I forgot you probably have a key switch in your box. It's all color coded wire so it shouldn't be to difficult if you are wiring in a new key switch. The colors will be the same on the new and the old switch as long as it is the same brand and it may be a plug in harness but you'll have to look behind there to check. If your old key switch is in good shape just remove it from the old housing. Take the one out of the hole in the new housing and put in the old key assembly. No wires to deal with then.
As far as new cables, such as throttle and such, you can use the old ones if they are smooth and work well. If not, use the old cable to to pull the new cable through the side of the boat. Make sure all tie wraps are removed for easy movement. Then thoroughly tape the end of the new cable to the end of the old cable and pull it through the hull. Attachment will be the same or extremely similar.

Thanks guys and keep the suggestions coming. What about any wires going to the console?
