    Need help on pouring jigs

I have been pouring my own jigs for about a year now and have had great sucess. the main question is what is the best way to install weedguards , I am curently pouring them then powder painting , then taking a small drill bid and removing the paint from the hole and putting in the weedguard with epoxy. There has got to be a easier way.

Also , what is is fluxing thing I keep hearing about, I guess I am not doing it. How is it done?

Re: Need help on pouring jigs (Cooney)

I heat mine up with the basehole pin in the jig. While it is still warm I can twist the basehole pin out and then bake it. Some paint may go into the hole but I only have to ream maybe 1 in 50 out because too much paint is in there. It is important to pull the pin out while it is still warm or the paint will harden and chip away around the hole if you remove it after cooling.

stick the weedguard in while the paint is drying and the paint will hold the weedguard everytime.

Fluxing is just adding a marble or sugar cube size piece of candle wax to the molten lead. Give it a quick stir.

CAUTION: Do it outside, clear of anything. It smokes heavily and may flame up. Wear a leather glove, safety glasses, and use a long handle spoon.

Basically it helps separate the impurities from the lead. They float up and you skim them off. You'll get smoother pours and less fouling of the pot and spout.

So I will heat them them dip in the paint and remove the base hole pin before it gets hard , correct? I guess you will have to clean the base hole pins after a few uses?

    Thanks guys for the info

To clean the pins, heat them over a heat gun or torch to soften the paint and just wipe it clean.

try what i was saying on a couple, before the paint cools off stick the weedguard into the hole and when the paint dries it will hold it with no issues.

It seems like my paint dries to fast to get the weed guard in.

It would be difficult to get the weed guard in fast enough to seal it with the paint. Pull the pin and cure the paint. If the guard doesn't "dry fit", clear the hole with a drill bit with your fingers. If you do it carefully, it only takes a few seconds, and won't chip the paint. Even if it chips a little, it's not enough to make a difference. I use the devcon epoxy to secure the guards and it covers any flaws. If any fish has a problem with that, I don't want him anyway!!

Re: Need help on pouring jigs (ZX190 MIKE)

go ahead and power paint the jig heads without the weed guard in it and bake the paint after they cool take a dremel tool or a variable speed drill and a 1/8 in bit and line up the hole like you want the weed guard to go and clean out the paint in the weed guard hole. It also makes it where the epoxy will hold the weed guards in the heads better and the weed guards won't be falling out. If using a high speed drill make sure that you hold the jig head with a pair of vice grips to keep from getting a hook in your hand if the bit locks up and spins the jig out of your hand.

Re: Need help on pouring jigs (QUICK)

All tips are great and I have used most of them. I use a medium viscosity instant adhesive (super glue) to secure my weed guards. Welcome to the club my friend!!
