question for don, and others. re:trim, and service manual.

i have a 07triton and 07 225pro xs. i have always stored my boat inside during the winter and keep it covered in the summer. in other words its treated like a baby. however, i have noticed that my trim started getting sluggish only sometimes. no matter which switch i used. sometimes it would be slow going up and sometimes down. i tightened all battery cables thinking it may be the problem. but yesterday out in the middle of the lake, twice it would not work at all. it wasnt until i attempted to take off (which did not work since it was up a little to much to plane out), that it suddenly started working again. any ideas as to the culprit. such as the most common cause of this. also (question 2) would a service manual help me with problems like these. i do not have a dealer remotly close to me. and if it showes step by step things i might be able to tackle some of them. and here is another one. (question 3) ever since i have had this boat, the trim guage never has went all the way up. it is a triton, so i guess the guages are analog. i adjusted the trim sending switch to no avail. getting it to show trim all the way up, but when down it would show half way on the guage. i made a long haul to a dealer and they said they put a new guage on and it does the same thing, then stated it was normal for the trim to only move 1/4 on the guage. all help is appriciated, main concern is the trim not working though.

Re: question for don, and others. re:trim, and service manual. (deception)

The issues with "slow operation" could be caused by:

-Poor connections to the relay harness (ground wires or power wires at positive post of solenoid)
-Poor engine ground cable connection at the engine block
-Weak Battery Condition (or poor/loose connections- use SS Locknuts only)!
    -Weak Relays
-Poor connections between Relay harness and Trim Motor
    -Weak or Failing Trim Motor
    -Overfilled Trim System

Service manual does give some great diagnostic tips- although a general knowledge of circuitry (and an ability to test through the circuits is assumed).

On the trim gauge, keep in mind that the gauge is intended to read "approximately down" with the engine trimmed all the way down, and "approximately up" when then engine is at the end of it's full TILT range (not the trim angle range you would operate in at WOT). Trim angle (WOT range) will usually read approximately 1/4 on the gauge.

thank you don, i will check my connections and also make sure everything is tight. i would check the trim fluid, but have never did this before. is the correct way to do it is as follows. trim the motor all the way up, undo the flat head bolt on the bottom of the trim motor housing, let drain, then re install flat head bolt, remove yellow fill cap/bolt and fill till full with boat level. i have never messed with it due to the warning sticker that says you can be injured if you dont have the motor in the correct up position. if this problem is the trim motor would it be under warrenty with the motor, or is it considered a seperate device. also, thank you for the super fast responce. it is nice to get info from someone with the knowlege base you have in this field, and it takes time to answer all the post, the help is greatly appriciated.

The fill screw is not at the bottom of the trim unit- it will be a plastic cap near the top of the unit, on the PORT or LEFT side (the cap screws in "from the engine side, not the boat side").

Trim system is covered under the Engine Warranty Period.
