Storing boat in unheated garage. Heat lamp works great to keep everything ok.

Usually keep my boat in 3rd car garage but built an out building. Has concrete floor and power but no heat this year. Ran out of money. I bought a heat lamp with a 250 watt bulb. I put the cover on boat and then a tarp over the back half almost like a tent. I put the heat lamp back by the motor and it really warms up everything. I could not believe it. Thought I would just pass this inexpensive way to keep your toy just a little warmer and you can continue to use it all year long without worry.

One other note: like most of today's heat sources, your light bulb requires electricity to function. Ice storms often knock out power... and come with freezing temps.....

    Just something to think about........

+1 and +2......and using a 250 watt infrared heat lamp 24hrs a day for the entire winter is going to suck some serious juice. It be cheaper to just winterize it.

Agree with everyone. I just winterized the boat this weekend and will not use the heat lamp. After I thought about it more a pretty dumb idea and I could have started a fire. Guess I will save up some money and put in a heater in the garage that will continue to heat even if power is lost.

    Thanks for all the replies.

Not sure why you need heat. I live in NY and from Nov to March we have below freezing temps most of the time and many days below zero. If your motor and boat are properly winterized there shouldn't be a need for heat. Been boating since the early 70's and have never had a the luxury of a heated garage and never had any cold weather related problems.
I do however keep my rigs in tented "cover-its" just so I can work on stuff over the winter and keep the weather off it.
drain all water in motor, bilge and livewells ,change oil in LU, treat fuel or drain (depends on what school of thought you believe in) bring all electronics into the house and you're good to go.
Oh yeah and sprinkle spearmint oil in all compartments to keep them uninvited guests out of your wiring.

The heater in the garage is great. Not only does it keep your toys from freezing up but it is a great place to "get away" for the day. Throw a TV in there and not only do you get to see all the football games but you can do it while looking at those nice shiney toys you got. My wife once asked me why I spend sooo much time in the garage and I told her " cause things I like are out there"
