1991 Evinrude Intruder 175, will not stay running

Hi all,

My motor is a E175GLEIS

When I go to start the engine it will rarely start, and if it does start, it will only run for a second or so before it stalls. If I try to put the pedal to the floor it will often start, but will run like crap, and sounds very muffeled. Once it is started if I let off the gas it dies. The entire time it is running,when I can get it to, it smokes like crazy. I have raw gas and soot coming out of the prop and exhaust ports. The exhaust looks like swamp mud.

Here is a list of all I have done thus far:
- Compression check is good.
- Used an inline spark tester to test all plugs for spark, all have spark.
- Cleaned all carbs, blew out all orifices including the air bleed orifices, jets, and needle valves.
- Fuel pump is new last year, all bowls have gas when it dies.
- Spark plugs (proper Q-type) and Plug wires have one trip on them (so pretty much new).
- Back-washed/cleaned the fuel filter/screen.
- Synced all the carb throtle valves.
- Tried to advancing timing while starting (using the timing advance lever that the throttle linkage advances), this had little to no effect (this is where I started getting really desperate).
- Ohm'ed out the stator, it was good.

I am completely stumped...


Does anyone have any Ideas?

It Fired up first turn of the key today, but then died - it flooded out.

I am checking the choke valve now, trying to find a test procedure.

Checked the spark too, all the cylinders cleared a 7/16 gap.

Any Ideas?

Is the red valve on the primer solenoid pointed towards the bottom of it?

I just disconnected the fuel pump, ran it off the gas in the bowls. It ran, smoked a little, but ran and sounded much better. Fuel was flowing from the pump well. about a 1/4 gallon of gas in less than a minute while mostly at idle.

I didn't use a carb rebuild kit, so maybe the needles? or the choke valve?

Ideas?

Nope, let me get some gas and try it now that the valve is fixed.

Yep that actually fixed it, now I need to sync the throttle and advance Lever. Do I have to remove the shift cable to get to the throttle cable?

Timing looks good at 7* (within the 6 +/- 1 in the book).

I really appreciate the suggestion, that saved me A LOT of time for sure.
