Lower Unit Question for my 2004 Johnson 175...

I have a 2004 Johnson 175 (J175GLSRM)...It has a hot foot, when i put it into gear sometimes it kinda acts like its not going all the way in...like a few seconds after putting it into gear i will feel and hear a thud making me believe then that now its actually into gear...i've never really experienced it in reverse, but of course I dont use it as much either...I asked a local marina hear about it and he asked if I had my foot on the throttle while putting it into gear, but i know now that im not, i have checked myself several times to make sure....Maybe just an adjustment issue?...please help!!!

This would be an adjustment issue. If not caught in time, you will round off some sharp edges on the gear and clutch and have to replace these parts.
