Have you owned it since new? or mabye a few years, either way it sounds as if it's never been decarbed.Fred, ChampionMan recommends to run 2+2 fuel conditioner, which is the same as seafoam or ringfree for a couple tanks to help soften the carbon first, then when you decarb it will help remove more carbon. To decarb, which is a yearly or every 100 hr routine, requires a can of engine tuner available at your nearest Evinrude dealer, and following the instructions on the can. The carbon can and will eventually cause the rings to stick, causing piston scuffing and bigger problems down the road.
Welcome aboard, hope this helps some, we have the rockinest J/E boards on the www. with more gurus that KNOW these engines and can help a lot. The only thing they ask is the model and serial #'s of your engine when posting any problems.

Use the seafoam and run carbon guard in the gas. The seafoam works well, as does the OMC engine tuner.

The less gas you have in the tank, the more effective it is. You can use it through several tanks of gas to slowly clean the motor out. Don't be surprised to find some extra HP when you finish.
