A friend has an '89 big bore looper, does anyone know of any detrimental effects of running the engine without the air box cover? He runs standard size carbs with correct jet's. Thanks for any input.

The internals will become externals......... too much air going in will cause a lean condition, and start eating itself.....
If it's jetted right it should be fine. With the air box off you can ingest more dirt with can cause a problem and cause some cylinder scoring??
