    stratos trailer safety recall

just received the safety recall today on 2002-2006 trailers with retractable tongue. the steel frame insert is not inserted into brake actuator housing on the trailer frame. the top insert could crack and cause the tongue to hit the road surface , which could result in a crash. take it to your dealer to inspect and fix if nessary. not all of the trailers have this problem, but mine does so it will make the trip to the dealer for repairs.

Re: stratos trailer safety recall (Lea)

Just got my letter. My trailer is not affected by the photos. But I am sure glad I crawed under there and inspected it.
Ive built enough tube chassis race cars to know something about strength and how to brace metal.
Mine only goes maybe 3/4 of a inch farther into the frame. I know what they are thinking. It will shear at the weakest point if you hit a large bump in the road or swag. Like at a bridge.( I about bet this has happened.)
Now before anybody defends anybody. If you have any experience in welding you craw under and take a look.
Mine only has two little spot welds on this piece. I can tell you if it breaks it will still break at the same spot.
My fix, first Iam gonna cut the tab that holds the cables off. Then Iam going to put a piece of 3/16 or 1/4 steel on laying flat on the frame and take it to almost the master cylinder but still be able to get the brake line off. Weld it to sides by master cylinder and across the bottom on the back side. And maybe add another piece once I get the first piece in there. Then weld the tab back on.
Hey this might be overkill but we got some nasty bumps before and after bridges and I cant remember them all to slow down.
If you cant weld or fabricate take it back to your dealer.
Sure glad Stratos sent the letter out and was posted here also.
Anybody ever see the backside of some motorhomes with the real big overhang some of them had this same shear problem. Cant take the bounce
