    Hard to start 1988 200XP

Having trouble on initial starts lately. Tried it on a hose in the driveway. Very difficult to get it to fire. Once going she seems ok. Did notice that I get a little black sludge out the exhaust once I shut her down. Drips down the skeg. This morning I fired it up, after difficulty. Once she fired, she spit a lot of black sludge out the prop. Any thoughts appreciated. 1988 200XP

When's the last time you decarbed it?

Re: Hard to start 1988 200XP (Fishaholic)

I have a 89 200XP that was also hard to start when I got it this year.

It was real hard to start first thing in the morning, but would start fine the rest of the day. Turned out that I had a broken hose on one of the nipples on the primmer solenoid. Check that solenoid out real close, and look for any cracked hoses. Also check to make sure the primer solenoid is working. You should be able to push in on your ignition key and hear the solenoid click.

With your "Black Sludge" comment I have a question.

Do you smell fuel when sitting?

    Re: Hard to start 1988 200XP (RUSTY63)

Thanks for the feedback. Motor was decarbed last September when it was in the shop for rectifier and stator problems. I'll check the primer function, have thought about replacing fuel line and and primer bulb just due to age as well. I can definetley smell fuel when running on hose. Once motor was running, did not have sludge. Thought maybe it was from all the cranking to get her to finally run.

Well, the loud groaning sound coming from the starter is not good. Have always heard this on occassion. Now it is just consistent.

Sludge is most likely from the unburned fuel coming out the exhaust ports draining down the mid-section and coming out through the LU. I would definatly get it checked out but sounds electrical to me.
