E-Tec 175 - Warranty, software and a power head question?

I have a new E-Tec 175HP Model #E175DPXSU S/N 05195412. I was supposed to get the extended warranty but since my dealer didn't actually register the engine I was wondering if someone could check? Also any software updates?

I happened to be out with a Mercury sales man who indicated the 150 / 175 HP E-Tecs have issues with oil delivery. Specifically if you are running at idle and then you decide to really punch it there is limited oil in the top cylinders which is why there are power head failures? Any one know if this is true or is this Merc telling tales.

    Thanks

I can not check your serial number at this time but will try again later.

I have only had two problems with the 60 degree motors and both were boat related.

    Thanks John,

The Merc Sales man was pointed to a police boat rigged with a 175 E-Tec as he was telling the tale. Not sure if it's something the police were doing or how they run their boat, I typically don't idle around and then throw it to WOT.

We service the local water patrol and I have seen what they can do to motors and it is not the motors fault...

I have right at 800 hours on a pair of 175 ETECs. I had 3 FALSE low oil pressure alarms on the starboard engine during the first 10 hours. A simple tie wrap fixed that problem. Aside from that, they have been to the dealer twice. Once for the 300 hour service and once for the 600 hour service.

They have been exceptional engines. Without a doubt, the most trouble free and reliable that I have ever owned.

    Thanks Fletch,
I assume the Police would have killed Mec's if they had had those. I have 7 hours on the engine so far and I can't say enough good things about it.

I checked your serial number and it appears the motor has a standard 3 year warranty.

    Thanks John,
I will give the dealer a call, since it should have been for 7 years

Called the dealer, since another dealer registered the warranty they are going to call them to see what the mixup is.

Can't really comment on the warranty question, but can testify that there are issues with the ETEC 150s. I have less than 55 hours of running time and have blown 6 powerheads! Last one just blew today. Here are serial numbers of original engines:

I just picked up a used e-tec 150 that had a power head go with the first owner. What are the symtoms that a power head or a piston has gone bad? Should any alarms go on? Thanks.

No alarms, If you have a competent tech you should have no issues.

    Re: E-Tec 175 - Warranty, software and a power head question? (RUSTY63)

    Rusty63,
Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure who did the replacement but I would think they were certified. The owner told me that the motor is programed to run XD30 but said I should continue to run XD100 for brake in(10-15 more hours). The reason I asked about symtoms was because when I had it out the other day the motor seemed to start shaking when I was docking it to take it out of the water and it seemed louder. It was only my second time out with the motor so I was a little concerned. Thanks.

I would get it back to the dealer when you can and have him look at the spark plugs and check the running temps just to be sure all is good.
