I don't actually know about the 96,but my wife and I had a 98 that was solid as a rock.Send ol Backlash a message cause he seem's to be the guru.He is really smart,as many other people on here are.
If you will,get on basszone.com and go to the classifieds and they've got some newer Cobras for pretty cheap.I think I saw a 98 201D for like 12,000 on there.Good luck and you can't go wrong with a Cobra!!!!!!

Champman...she's as solid as the Rock of Gibraltor! Sit down, attach the kill switch and drive it like you stole it! No chine walk and very easy to drive. You'll be pleased with a Cobra!

Boat sold. I will keep looking. Any vipers in Texas for sale under $10,000 let me know. I saw a 188D but it has the Evinrude Fitch, I read these were bad motors and stay away from the Fitch.

Ficht motors are not as bad as everyone is trying to tell you. I have a 99 190D with a Johnson 175 Ficht and it is still running as we speak. TX 201 can verify this as we fish in the same club.
With that said even the new E-TEC's are having problems as did the Ficht motors, but people don't tell you to stay away from the do they. If I repower or by another boat I'm getting an E-TEC.
By the way my boat is for sale. It is under Backllash in the gallery, It now has a 2007 trailer under it that matches the striping.
