    New transom

Wanted to share a pic of my new transom rebuild...had a incident with a log on the Mississippi river. river-1, champ-0.

Not sure when the went to a all composite transom but after looking what was in mine, it only seem to be filled with composite foam. But it seem to be pretty strong.

    Thank goodness for insurance.

    Re: New transom (champ188)

Foam is what "all composite" means most of the time. The marketing lingo is confusing, but lots of times, in many boat brands, the wood in the older hulls is just as good as the "composite" in the newer ones. Pretty much anything in a transom, if not sealed properly is gonna have issues. I've never built a boat, but I know as long as boats have been built transoms have failed.

Glad you are back on the water!

"Composite" does not mean 100% fiberglass. Structural foam is the material of choice for most modern builders for transoms, stringers and such. It is actually quite strong when it's done right, but it does have it's own set of potential issues.

"Composite" does not in any way mean "idiot proof" for the guy building it, far from it.

What did they used material wise to rebuild your transom and did they do anything different to add extra structural strength?

They are currently working on the boat now. They will use fiber glass sheets and rebuild it. according to other people in the area, they build a strong transom and I shouldn't have to worry about it again. Thats good for me.

That happen to my buddy with his ranger 4 weeks ago. Thats horrible, I actually fished a few tournaments out of mine after it was damaged. I am shocked at how it held up.

True, but I doubt many mfgs are calling their plywood transoms composite.

Naw...that is layered material. Composite is a mix. Of course that leaves it wide open for other suggestions (don't even go there ), but you get the idea. Folks get all wound up about composites, yet properly encapsulated wood will last forever, as long as it is not compromised....

And composites can be seriously compromised and turn to mush! It all boils down to proper sealing and care!

    Re: New transom (Steve 187)

Champ now uses a pvc board that is very strong, etches with polyester resin extremely well, and since it's not a urethane based board (like coosa) it is 100% hydrophobic, and damn near 100% gas, oil, and "other" chemical proof. It is very good stuff.

There is a reason why our water and gas lines running into out house are PVC and not urethane. Urethane will absorb water and breaks down when in contact with petroleum based products. I do recommend shying away from coosa type products. If the boat is not sealed perfect, it will drink water like wood can.

Like has been said before, if built well there are few materials as good to work with as wood.

That's just part of it.. The whole thing is then encapsulated in chocolate and many ingredients comprise of the layers.

I would guess that the wafer on it's own would not be strong so you need layers of of filling between and then wrapped in chocolate.

But I figured if we were going to bring out some silly stuff like paper mache', I would take it further..

    hahahahaha .

I am not complaining.. Lea is right though... Even composites can get pulverized if water gets in there by a process called hydrolic erosion.
