    skinny champ w/yamaha??

Has anyone with a skinny champ and yamaha VMax noticed water coming in the air vent on the back (top) of the cowling? I noticed water draining from the front weep holes when I trimmed my motor up after shutting off the motor. I checked all the usual things that could cause a water leak and did not find anything. I can idle around for 10 minutes shut the motor off and there is not any water inside the cowling. The only time I notice water is after running on pad. I decided to watch the back of the boat when coming off pad, and noticed the wave that crashes into the boat when it sets down, reaches the top of the cowling where the air vent is located. Has anyone else had this issue and if so what can be done about it?

Overwash onto back deck or motor could be an issue with any brand of motor if you don't give it a little "goose" as you come off plane. Just don't come flying in and shut down quite so quickly. You will get used to the timing..

I have goosed it, prolonged the sit down when coming off pad and the wave still reaches the top of the cowling. I have owned three champions, all have been the skinny hulls, and they all take a wave when coming off pad, the only difference is this is the first yamaha i've had on a champion. The newer wide body champs set down differently than the skinny boats.

Might be the motor, but I have no clue. I have had 2 narrows and now my wide-body. But I had a Rude on the first (86") beam, and Mercs on my 90" and 95" beamers. Once I got the timing down, no issues.

You say all have taken a wave when coming off pad? Mine did, too...until I got the timing down. Not sure how to help. You are too far away...

Is your water pressure gauge working okay? The fitting on the motor is at the top of the head and it could have come loose.

The water pressure is running 18 pounds WOT. The water pressure hose was one of the first things I checked.

Talk with Todd at C&O. Send him an IM. He has run newer Champs with Yamahas. Maybe he or another owner will have some insight, but if that wave is catching up with you, I think it is going to come down to different timing...

Just trim it down when you're stopping.

Both my rear tank skinny Champs had Yamaha's on them and between what Lea and Pat suggest I never had a problem with excessive water in the cowl.

Are you trimming all the way down? My old 181 would get water on the top of the cowling if I just shut it down without trimming all the way down.

If you take you foot off the gas and let the hull rise to the surface then tap the throtle just before the back wash arrives this will stop. Let the boat float up.
