Johnson 1989 40. J40 elcec Changing l/u oil I removed the screw at the front of the hub thinking it was the vent. Three screws on the side and this is the middle screw. Just a 1/4 20 screw 1 inch long.

Make sure the o-ring seal is ok and put it back in.
I did. Thanks. I was afraid it held something inside that would fall when the screw was removed.
Not on that gear case, on the older ones that screw holds the shift cradle and it must be lined up before reinstalling the screw.
For everyone reading this....Never take a Phillips Head Screw out of a Johnson or Evinrude Gear case if you only want to change the oil.
