Engine overheat alarm sounding but ?not overheating?

I have a 2005 Evinrude DI 175hp, while out on Dale today my overheat alarm went off while cruising at about 5000 RPM but the motor never shut down to idle speed, I brought it off plane, looked back and had good water flow and good water pressure on the gauge but I shut down anyway and started fishing. Now here's the kicker, I let the engine sit for two hours in 50 degree air, 48 degree water while I fished, when I started the engine the overheat alarm immediately sounded again (2 seconds at most after the engine started). With good water flow and water pressure both at idle and at 5000 RPM and the engine not going to idle speed automatically and the alarm sounding even on a cold engine what is the problem and can I fix it myself?

    Thanks!

Tough day, only managed 3 Smallies, 1 nice Spot, and about a 3-4 lb Walleye (in the freezer now ) Wish I could have run to all my spots but didn't want to take the chance.

IF the HOT light and the horn come on and the motor does not got into the SLOW rpm reduction, then you may have a glitch in the EMM or a problem with the guage, as it generates the alarm signal to the lite and horn.

It would be best for a trained dealer to check out for you. The first thing to do is check for any error codes and look at the temperature profile from the report. It has to be determined if the motor actually overheated and if so, why the SLOW did not kick in.
