    225x won't spool up

Recently acquired 225X will not rev past 3500 max in neutral, and will not get boat on plane. It idles very smoothly but makes no power. The oil level in the oil tank on the motor was low, but the cap was opened and it was then totally filled. There are no alarms at all and the smartcraft gauge doesn't indicate any problems. The battery is new and shows about 12.4 volts prior to starting the motor, and about 14.2 after the motor is fired up. My son and I spent the whole weekend trying to figure out what's wrong with this motor after a 100 mile drive to get to the water. PLEASE HELP! This motor had recently been switched from one boat to another by the previous owner. Any thoughts?

Probably not it but did you check to make sure the throttle cable is advancing all the way?

As far as I could tell, the throttle set-up was fine.

    Re: 225x won't spool up (catfish123)

Bob, this was Neals motor right? Have to be overlooking something cuz it worked on his XB21 ProSport...which I know that you know that. Linkages, fuel restriction, .....did you check the alarms circuit meaning you know that if there is an overheat for example the boat alarm will go off?? Just asking. I didn't have mine right when I hung mine. I forget which wires to jump back on the switch box to test the alarm is working. So just wondering if the beeps will sound since you said that the oil reservoir was low. Fill that sucker up!! Just trying to help

Darth...I thought you were a strict Yammi guy?? !!!! Good one.....

It has to be something simple. That would be my luck..I'd spend hours and hours and mucho money and end up being something I did stupid.

LOL...well. Not so much. I did pick my new (to me) Yamaha Friday and delivered it to Hydro-Tec..

Heres to just getting back on the water (no matter the color of the motor)

I do like the 225x motors

    Re: 225x won't spool up (catfish123)

    Bob,
As Craig stated, make sure the horn beeps when you turn the key on. If not, the engine could be going into gaurdian due to low water pressure, bad float switch in oil tank or a few other things.
Do you have water psi showing on the smart craft gauge? On second thought, if it goes into gaurdian you would see the bell and check engine symbol on the SC gauge.
Call me if you don't see the problem.

to getting back on the water!! Can't wait....

A Hydro-Tech Yammi....now that's gonna be cool!! I have heard so many great things about Hydro-Tech and the performance gains it makes me want one.

I saw a video on youtube with a before and after test with a Hydro-Tech on a Stratos and it was a monster!!! That Stratos was hauling butt!!

    Re: 225x won't spool up (catfish123)

Got to be something simple the motor ran awesome on Neals old 03 and xb21.

Edit: Theres more to the story.........Neal said the fella disconected lines and such to run a new rigging hose. Apparently something was left undone or air in the oil line etc.

    Re: 225x won't spool up (catfish123)

Wonder what fouled the plugs then? My 225x lost a coil when it was a month old, fouled the plugs and wouldn't outrun a 3 legged dog.

They are proud of those plugs, that was the last time I replace them till they just have to come out

    Re: 225x won't spool up

I didn't have very good luck with those high dollar OEM BPR8EVX Platinum plugs. About 40 hours per set before they started to degrade performance. The BPR8EIX Iridium's seem to be holding up better. Less expensive too.

Hey........ep72........nothing left "undone", just bad plugs in the motor, running only on 4 cylinders.

Running only on 4 cylinders, eh Bob??? OH, I get it...you just don't want Matt to show you up on the top end speed of his "new" XB2003 vs your top numbers on your XB2003 when you had the 225x as well. And Matt figured it out!!

Re: 225x won't spool up (AllyFishing)

Har, har, har...........you are hilarious Craig.............but since Matt was the one in my XB2003 with 225X who got the high number of 97.1 mph........he is competing against himself and with gas prices being what they are, he can go for it all he wants this year as I may tend to fish a bit more. Not much to prove now to anyone with the 280..............LOL

    OK,OK......so I stuck 2 fouled plugs in his motor...........CHEEEEEEEEEEEEEZ!

    Re: 225x won't spool up (catfish123)

Glad to see ya got a sense of humor!! LOL!!!!! Yeah the gas prices are going to cut into my prop running. But you know you are going to want to open that 280 up and let it eat!! I'm excited to hear how that beast pushes that XB03 of yours.

You may not want to let Matt in your boat!!

Hope the plugs were th issue!

Re: 225x won't spool up (AllyFishing)

The guy at Shy Beaver said cylinders 1 and 3 weren't firing at all. He moved the plugs then to 2 and 4 and then those wouldn't fire. Matt and I will probably go back up this weekend. You better start planning to come over to the lake.....SOON!
