WOT RPMs for a 2000 Johnson 200 OceanPro

Not a bass boat guy, but this is a freakin' great forum for engine info...

    Make: Johnson
    Model: J200VXSS"S"
    Serial: G04806863
    Year: 2000

What is the ideal operating RPM for this motor? Right now, I am turning about 5100 - 5300 fully loaded.

    Thanks in advance.

5500-5700 will do you good. You'll get better performance here, your mid range will improve on the takeoff.

OK, I pulled off the air box to see if my throttle was opening the carb plates completely, and they were not. I adjusted the throttle to open them completely, the RPMs went up to about 5600, but the boat is actually slower. I assume this is because I added 26 gallons of fuel. Sound reasonable?

Should the plates be completely open at full throttle?

    Thanks.

ok, i'm a noobie to the forum and boat engines. My only thought is that maybe it richened things up a bit too much?

Well, I would guess if I have introduced a problem, I would guess leaning... but, I didn't hear any pinging. I really don't know, though.

duh.....my bad, was thinking backwards. Being a newer engine is there a possibility that you did lean it out and maybe timing got pulled by a sensor, killing performance?

26 gallons of fuel (at roughly 6lbs/gal) is a lot of weight! How did it slow you down?

Well, conditions may not have been the same... maybe a little windier, rougher, etc. The top speed was approximately 3 mph less. I assumed that without slipping, the top speed would be affected as well as RPMs. (At least, that's the way it was with my old boat. In other words, when my old boat was heavy, top speed was down and the RPMs were down.)

I had RPMs up and top speed down.

This is on a 22 ft bay boat (boat+ motor = 2100 pounds dry). Prop is 14 3/4"x19.

Could have been higher slippage numbers. In my Stratos, if I add a passenger (about 200lbs) my rpms stay the same or increase by about 50rpm but my speed drops about 1mph...could be in your setup or prop.

Yeah, that's what I am starting to think... big swing in slip numbers!

    Thanks for the input.
