4 stroke 50hp differences?

What have been the changes with the 50hp 4 stroke since it came out in 96? I can't tell just from looking at them, but they have different part numbes for the same parts for different years?

I'm in the market for a 50 or 60 4-stroke, and I am wondering if there are any years to stay away from?

I think you would be fine with any of the year models.I haven't heard of anything bad on any of them.

the next question is, what would it take to convert the 50 to a 60? Is it just carb jetting, and computer, or would there be a lot of changes to make?

There's a guy on one of the duck hunting boards called The Refuge. He knows how to do it. He's been racing small outboards forever. As a matter of fact he's from LA as well. He mostly knows the Merc's and Yamaha's as far as 4-s is concerned ..... 2-s he know's them all, especially Merc and Tahotsu.

But to answer your question, it depends on the year and make/model. Some it's as easy as removing the restrictor plate, other's it's the plate, timing and a new ECM. Also, apparently Merc has caught on to this as well, as I'm told you can not just go buy a ECM for another HP, now your serial number must match up. But there's always eBay.
