1994 Evinrude Intruder HARD TO TURN???

I have a 1994 Evinrude Intruder and just took it out of winter storage and the steering wheel is incredibly hard to turn. I don't have hydraulic steering so I expect some difficulty but this is worse than last year. Is there some kind of tension knob or grease fitting??

Any help is appreciated...I broke in this motor last week (had it rebuilt) and my arms are still sore!

Sounds like you have old grease that is caked up inside the tube. SOMETIMES you an take the cable loose, clean out the old grease and HELP, but most of the time it is new cables...

I had the same problem a few years back, The solution was new cables.

Re: 1994 Evinrude Intruder HARD TO TURN??? (Sprint 207)

I have a '93 Faststrike with dual cables and had the same problem. I just turned the motor so the ends of the cables were fully extended and cleaned the old grease off with laquer thinner then greased them up good with the Evinrude triple guard grease. Turned back a forth quite a few times to work the grease in and loosen it up. Wiped off the excess grease and has been fine since then. I try to keep a light coat of the triple guard on it now. Worth a try.

Had the same on my '96. Turned out to be only one of the cables, but replaced both. Disconnect each one at the engine (and pull it out of the sleeve) and turn it. You'll find the bad one. Got the part number off the cable. It was embossed in the plastic and painted white and at the fwd end of the cable. Had to rubberneck around the sideboard. Numbers were close to the throttle. Don't remember the numbering system, except the last 2 were the length in feet. Punched the part numbers into the Google search bar and found an amazing range of prices for the SAME THING. Pretty easy to replace.
