    Lightning Lower Unit Anode Install?

    1999 Johnson 225 HO Carb. #J225HPLEEN

Long story short....(Yeah right.....I just noticed how long it was...Sorry) I had a new lightning gear case put on last year without the anode installed.

When I went to install the anode a few days later, I noticed that there was no threads for the bolt to screw into (when you run the bolt up through the bottom, then through the anode, there are no threads to screw into).

I need to install this anode because my lower unit has turned colors and I'm sure this is not good to keep running the motor without it. My questions are:

    1) Do you need to drill and tap threads on these Lightning gear cases?
    2) Can I do this with the lower unit still attached.....will shavings get to the critical parts if I leave the lower unit attached?

Thanks in advance for your assistance guys! I usually need your assistance a couple time per year........this will be my first of the year!

    M

Suprised the hole wasn't tapped out, sure you got the right hole? Any way you can order p/n 0330263 (bolt) and go to Lowe's and get a tap for the bolt and tap it out. I doesn't go into the midsection only the LU. No you don't have to pull the PU and you won't hit anything critical.

Thanks ChampionMan. I think the reason it wasn't tapped already is because I was rushing the dealer. My lower unit went out on me last July right in the middle of the tournament season......so I was pressing hard to get the boat fixed as quick as possible (3 days).

I have the bolt and anode for it .....I just wanted to make sure I had to drill & tap.....or if there was a different anode I needed to use that had a nut built inside of it.

    Thanks again!

The lightning gearcase does not use a tapped hole in the gearcase. It has a self threading bolt that threads into the anode itself,. When you go to the dealer ask them for the anode, bolt and washer. I can get you the numbers if you need them.

Yes........Please get me the part numbers.....PLEASE! My dealer is 4 1/2 hours away....but there is a Johnson dealer 20 miles away!!

This is EXACTLY why I did this post........something just did not seem right with the bolt & anode my dealer gave me (I believe it's the one used on my old Johnson LU and not inteded for the Lightning Gear Case)

    Thanks for your help......VROOOM!!!

Anode 341219,washer 307161, screw 436745. It'll wurk better if you put the anode in a vise to hold it when you thread the screw into it, then take the screw out and reinstall it into the gearcase. It is a self threading screw, it does take some muscle to get it into the opening. Good luck! Happy Fishing!!!
